Oil Leak Top Rear of Engine.

Hi,
I have had a developing oil leak over the last month or so, that has now become a flood.

I have read about turbo pipes, however from a quick look in the dark with a torch, the turbo seems dry.

The oil seems to be coming from the top rear of the engine, running down the bell housing (both side seem equally wet).

I changed the oil filter (and seal) over the weekend, hoping this would cure it, power washed the engine, done 20miles....soaking wet again!

As it's pretty tight over the bell housing and down the back of the engine, therefore can't see much......can anyone suggest where I should be looking / feeling for possible source.

Thanks.

Same happened here on a friend D3 and the problem was the black oil filter bell with a crak, really hard to see because it opens a bit only when properly tightened.

Cheers guy's,
I did pay particular attention when replacing the filter a couple of days ago, as I had read this could be a possible cause.

The ring and the housing seemed good.

I'll check it again to see if it's wet, as I degreased and power washed the top of the engine with the cover removed.

Cheers, Garry

Have checked the oil cover...it's dry.

The lovely clean oil I put in 2 days ago has now soaked the bell housing and cross member, big droplets hanging off.

I reckon this is a really big leak!....lust can't find the origin!

Are there any oil carrying pipes running over the top of the bell housing?

Mac, you have not filled in your profile - is it a diesel? Are you sure it is wet from oil and not from diesel which will show as oily and wet?

Help with oil leak please

Did it look anything like this?

and

and

A limited amount of oil dribbled off the back of the bash plate after a bit of 'rock mode' yesterday (but without any knocks). Also coincided with an engine oil top-up earlier that day - no spills. Engine oil level remains ok and drove home for two hours afterwards with no untoward noise or overheating. No signs of oil between cylinder banks on top.

Before it goes to the garage, does anybody have any suggestions or has seen this before? Thanks,
David

Hi, never did anything further.

Suffers from quite frequent smell of hot oil and a few oil drips (not many) but I keep an eye on engine oil level (398000km) and try not to worry Whistle

David.

After taking a closer look I realized that the cooler (below the oil filter) was leaking ... I inserted a rod next to the filter and pulled them out, it was full of oil ... in fact the oil stagnates in the "V" of the two cylinder heads ... and once on a slope, the oil spills onto the gearbox bell ...

Hi Daniel,

I changed the gasket between oil cooler housing and block a few months back and the leak on my car was stopped. Easy job, except for the enigma that is removing the oil separator. There were clear signs of galvanic corrosion and failure of the old steel gasket. I scraped off the corrosion and sanded everything smooth working up to 2000 grit sandpaper before fitting the new gasket. Took me about 4 hours end-to-end in the self-garage.

Cheers,

Andy
