US Analysis of Vehicle Issues And Class Actions...Land Rover

Interesting article below showing analysis using Nissan vehicles to highlight long term issues that have supported class actions. Could this database have enough in to lead to a class action against Land Rover...oil pumps, auto gearboxes etc

If you look at the Long Term Quality Index website it concludes LR4 is well above average reliability whilst LR3 isnt. As Robbie often says all the D3/LR3s are prototypes for D4/LR4s

Also LR3 2005 seemed a good year...something people feel on this forum.

It's certainly an interesting read. If anyone could actually legally challenge and prove their case for some of the things that happen then I do think JLR would be in serious trouble. Like you said the torque converter/gearbox issue for one. I've realised today that my torque converter is pretty much knackered. And my car has only done 84,000mls. Big Cry and I've yet to speak to anyone with a D3 that hasn't either had to have a new TC or needs one. I'm not speaking for everyone there but my own experience.

Mine started at 110000. Flush and Dr Tranny and seems okay at 134000 but I want to get to 200000 by 2020!

I haven't had a new torque convertor yet. However it's due to get fitted this week. Whistle

142k with a double flush at 85k. TC has almost become a service item at 120k. Thumbs Up

The results on http://longtermqualityindex.com/reports/Land%20Rover.html are interesting. According to that the freelander was extremely unreliable, but then says the Discovery was almost as bad whilst the LR2/LR3 were pretty good. So the difference was the ford tdv6 engine?

Surely each malfunction ie Gearbox could be down to how it's driven and maintained against conditions the car is in?...As their are people abusing the car against also manufacturing quality standards.

But the index infers it has enough data to cover the normal distribution range if careful drivers through to abusive drivers.

2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Aintree GreenDiscovery 4

Freelander = Freelander 1
LR2 = Freelander 2
LR3 = Discovery 3
Discovery = Discovery 2

Land Rover dropped the use of Freelander and Discovery in USA as a result of the poor reliability reputation of the vehicles.

You do get oddballs like the ZF gearbox issues. It is an incredibly robust and reliable item, but as Land Rover tells owners not to service it until a ridiculous (but out of warranty) 150,000 miles it just fails more often than not.

Is this a reliability issue, a customer issue, gearbox issue, or a JLR issue and how is this reflected in the data?

Robbie its a JLR issue as they provided data to the owners which has led to a silly servicing regime for what is probably a reliable unit.

If this was the US perhaps legally the original design and development comms between ZF and JLR would be forced into court but in the UK...no JLR sold the end product.
