FBH and temperature

My FBH is working fine, I fitted a new one from Duckworths when they were on special.

I have read some many threads about FBH and activation temperature I have been watching the behaviour in the last few days as I've the D3 a few times (normally it's the wife's transport)

FBH comes on below 6 degrees when the coolant temperature is low enough.

That's all business as usual, what I have seen in the last couple of days is a variation in the frost * symbol. I've had that on when the temp was 5 degrees but last night the display was showing 5 degrees but EXT next to it and not *. When the temp dropped to 4 the EXT went and the * came on.

FBH was on when below 6 whether it showed * or EXT

Interesting that there is a variation.

For a long time I thought the * symbol meant the FBH was on. Never worked out why there are two types of 5 degrees (* and EXT).

I think if it is 5 or more degrees when you start then it doesn't show the snow-flake, but if the temp drops below 5 when driving or is 4 or less when started then the flake symbol appears, symbol stays on till above 5 degs.

Ok Thumbs Up but why pick on 5 degrees. 0 = freezing 4=water max density for EG. Mayby it's the temp' where the engine won't "self" warm up ??

It's nothing but an arbitrary 'compromise' temperature taking into account interior heating, emissions, mpg etc, but snowflake symbol has no relevance to FBH operation. Interestingly enough they changed the 'on' temp to 9 C for the D4.

"but snowflake symbol has no relevance to FBH"

Whenever the * is there then the FBH will be activated(assuming coolant is not up to temp) given that the snowflake is only ever there below 6 degrees but as already said the FBH will run with 5 degrees and EXT showing.

So surely we argue the snowflake does have some relevance all be it indirectly?

If you like, but the FBH has no idea if the symbol is showing or not and the snowflake display logic is subtlety different to the FBH criteria. On the D4 the split between the FBH and snowflake is even greater.

Ice can form on the road at around 4C air temperature. Most cars that have a frost warming show at around 3 or 4C.

Has anybody found a way yet to adjust the temp at which it kicks in? Would be handy if it could kick in at say 8 degrees rather than 5.

Is the D4 coolant sensor physically the same as D3 but just different resistance, just swap and voila??
