| Wildtracks pay and play - near Newmarket |

Just wondering if anyone has any recent experience of this site? I am itching to take my D4 off road, so been looking around at possible sites and this one isn't a million miles from me.
Specifically - I am a novice, is there plenty of areas that would suit my abilities? I don't want any bramble rash, so is it overgrown or fairly open? Looking at google maps pictures, looks like there is a fair bit of open area, plus some through trees.

Hi LaserTam,
I have been there about half a dozen times with my D3 and Series 3.
It's a great site that offers a good range of obstables for novices who don't want any damage, to deeper wading in winter for people who have all the knobbly tires and snorkels  . Real trial enthusiasts will run out of things to do quite quickly.
The site is quite small compared to some places, so you will find you have gone full circle in an hour or so, but if you want somewhere to get a feel for what it's like it's ideal. Price is a bit steep at £30, but that's for all day. The first recovery with their tractor is free, then £5 for each recovery after that.
If you find a day you might go, let us know. I may be able to pop along as well depending on work schedule.
You're also not too far from Kings / Thetford forest if your near Newmarket. There is some nice green lanes around there you could also do. Light off roading, near impossible to get stuck if you follow the obvious route (don't make your own like some clowns do).[/list]

Thanks Roob, very helpful. Certainly sounds like my kind of place for my abililty/experience, really not wanting anything too challenging.
No dates in mind at the moment, not sure if I will even go through the winter, but if I do I will certainly let you know, would be good to have a friendly about. Thanks.
The green lanes is a good suggestion - I was up at Centreparcs a few weeks ago, if I had known, I might have sneaked out for a couple of hours to explore  - saying that, doubt I would have got permission! MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

Last went to Wildtracks years ago before they turned the main off road bit into a go cart track 
Also worth a look is Bures pit, t'other side of Sudbury - big quarry, can get very busy but most users are in the really tricky bits and that leaves the more straightforward bits quite free. You will find enough terrain to try ALL the knobs and dials!! Several good slopes to get to grips with HDC.
Green laning around the Kings Forest, Thetford is also nice - scratchy bits easy to avoid and nice and quiet.

Thanks Tomcat - not quite sure why that place didn't come up on any searches, way closer to me (near Southend) than Wildtracks and just looking at Google Earth, looks like a good option; open space for me to avoid any scratches
Guess its probably pretty wet this time of year or is it just the wet bits that get wetter?
Will let you know if I plan anything, looks like next P&P is 27th Dec, which is unlikely for me.
Maybe leave the green lanes for next year

No problem Laser.
Part of the site is pure sand so this drains quickly but there is a big "lake"/puddle in the middle and several wallows that never dry out! Haven't been for a while but it's not a bad way to spend a Sunday. 2016 Defender 110 XS

There is also Yarwell near Peterborough which is good, been a few times and you Can avoid anything too bad.

You cannot get stuck, couple of bits a little bramble rash but nothing serious (I took a D4). Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

I did visit Bures Pit earlier this year.
It's a good site for novices as well as people who set out to break things.
I got a few funny looks and remarks:
"You're brave bringing that here"
"Don't go that way, that thing won't make it!"
Other than the obviously impassable or dangerous obstacles I was able to go most places without any problems.
