D4 reliability vs D3 reliability

Hi there,

I am back looking for a second hand Disco. D3 or D4 is my question. I know D4 is ahaead in terms of on road drivability, braking, better interior etc, but it is more difficult to find good off road tyres because of the rim size.
All D3 I am looking at have had their EGR, compressor suspensions, suspensions and front triangles changed.
All D4 (2008-2010) have not. They are original.
Does it mean that D4 have solved all the D3 weaknesses or do I need to expect to have those costs to bear in the future?

Many thanks.

Cedric.

D4 is streets ahead of a D3. All D4 drivers complain about is cameras & plastic sump guard, for the d3 at the same time it was about everything else. Especially if it had a 3 letter name. Rolling Eyes

*Touchwood* I've had my 09 plate D4 for a year now.
Just about to turn 80k miles and I've replaced the discs and pads recently and just replaced the lower suspension arms due to knocking. They weren't an MOT fail, but were spoiling my enjoyment of the car.
Having driven the car for the last week, it has totally transformed my enjoyment of driving it. So much tighter, still not got the handling of a well sorted car, but so much more composed.

I'm currently running with the Land Rover extended warranty which is giving me peace of mind, its not cheap, but in my mind its worth having.
I was weary of reliability issues across the LR brand, however, to date its not been anymore disappointing (other than parts cost) of the Audi vehicles I'd run for the previous 10 years prior to buying it.

Reading this forum after buying my D4 a few weeks ago has shredded my nerves. I've lived with and loved some very high maintenance motorbikes but they were always toys. The disco is my daily driver and I've got 2 kids under 2. Love it so far and posts like the one above makes me think I've made the right choice. No nightmares on this thread please! Wink

Dont forget 99.9 percent of people post when they have issues, not many people post to say my car has been fine today.

Ps my car has been just fine and dandy on its massive 5 mile commute Mr. Green

I live in what must be the town with highest D4 per capita - during my 6km commute to work it is not uncommon for me to drive past 12-15 D4s - 6 parked on one street alone.

and the parts department at the local dealer don't keep anything in stock for the D4, that's how reliable they are. Thumbs Up

Lack of holding parts means did squat, i't just the dealer's way of not having too much money tied up in parts. Whistle

My 2010 D4 was very reliable this morning on its commute (and has been for the last 20k miles give or take the odd very minor thing) Thumbs Up

With around 250,000 pre-production D4s produced and tested for several years all over the world, the D4 reliability was all but assured.

LOL. Agree with that, I had 8.5 years in a D3 to be fair it only started heading south after five years. D4 is great but less than two years in so far.

I had my 3 for almost 8 years and loved it unconditionally. I spent very little on it apart from one compressor ( the other three were under warranty) and normal maintenance parts. Tyres were a thing I spent money on mostly.
My 12MY D4 I've had for one year and it has cost a set of tyres (£400 from here Thumbs Up ) and nothing else. I decided not to go the warranty route and save money in an account instead. I now have £1400 left of the £1800 I put in. Seems to be working so far. I also choose who works on it and can get a decent hourly rate too. Thumbs Up
