2006 D3 - EPB fault after underbody treatment - Solved! |
|
Underwent underbody treatment (including high pressure water cleaning and sandblasting) on my 2006 D3. When I picked up the car, both the yellow and red (flashing) warning lights for EPB was on, handbrake was not working. The workshop was made aware of this immediately.
Workshop visit 1:
They took the car back and erase and read the new error codes. The message then was that the inside electronic switch had to be replaced. I did this myself, and cleaned and adjusted drums and brakes.
Workshop Visit 2:
New error code check / deletion. EPB still not working.
Check of contacts under the car (no visible fault here) and control unit (behind the battery, steering wheel on left side). The contacts on the control unit were green with corrotion, this was cleaned. Still no function of EPB. The EPB actuator was tested, this seems to work as it should.
Workshop Visit 3:
Check and measurement of all wires from contacts in the rear and forwards. Voltage and resistance measured according to workshop. No wire fault detected.
Proposal from the workshop: Replace control unit that had corroded contacts
Proposal from LR (which I called for advice): Possible replacement of EPB actuator
Also checked with another workshop with LR experience: It could be several things that causes the error, but they had several times been successful in replacing the rear connectors.
Here I am now with an EPB still not working. All good suggestions would be appreciated.

What do you mean in practical terms? New wires from switch to actuator? Is this an easy fix at home in the garage?

Does all wires on the switch go directly to the actuator? Sorry for asking, but electrical setup on the D3 is new to me. And the wire color is the same both places?

Yes, there are 6 wires on the switch, but only 4 go to the module
The colours escape me ATM, but easily obtainable from GTR/ToPix, to ensure you get the correct wires My D3 Build Thread

It turned out to be a bad contact with one wire in the rear contact. The high pressure washing caused bad connection with one of the wires going to the switch inside the car, a red wire i think it was. After cleaning and re-attatchment of the wire everything was working perfectly.
I took the car to another garage with more LR knowledge and better diagnostics tools.
