Different EPB question.

Hi all

A few weeks ago I put new discs, pads and EPB shoes on the back of my D3, adjusted them, and bedded them in.
Up until Monday the EPB has been OK and worked well on my steep drive every night.

I’d not really had any issues with the EPB, except it becoming a little ineffective over the last few months as I’d not got around to cleaning the drums etc out for a year or so. The discs needed changing anyway so I renewed it all.

I have never in the 5 years I’ve owned it had the loud screech others have reported, although I have heard it coming from other D3s.

On Monday this week I parked the D3 on my steep drive, lifted the lever and got the usual hum that goes with the motor pulling the cables.
Then at the end there was a definite ‘Click’ I’d not heard before.
Without taking my foot off the brake I pushed the lever down to release the brake and all hell let loose with a much louder motor running type noise, but it wasn’t the screech I’ve heard from other D3s.
After what seemed like 10 seconds the noise stopped and the light went out with no indications there was a problem.

I moved the car to a flat bit of road, tried again and it was back to normal, yet back on the drive the same thing happened.
A ‘Click’ at the end of application and a loud motor running type noise to release it which went on longer than the normal low hum would.
Being 10.30 at night I just left it in Park and tried to forget it.
I won’t have a chance to get the back wheels off again until the weekend and am just using Park at the moment.

Has anyone experienced this exact problem and can maybe explain what the ‘Click’ could be?

The only thing I can think of is that I didn’t tighten the Allen head adjustment screw properly on one side, and the shoe is moving around on the adjuster making the click, then jamming on.

I’m obviously going to get in there and have a look to see what I can see at the weekend, but would appreciate any wisdom from somebody who’s been there before.

Thanks

Nasher.

Yep DM, I know you're right.

Thought I'd try it again just now.
No, I'll admit it - I put it on automatically without thinking as I parked up in my drive Embarassed

It's now giving the screech, and got stuck on, it took three attempts to release it.

Oh well, that's my Sunday Censored

Finally had a chance to strip down the EPB shoes etc again on the D3 today.

Couldn't see anything wrong with them at all Confused

So I adjusted them again, put it all back together and it appears to work fine now, although they were ok for @3 weeks after I did it last time, so we'll see what happens.

Thought I'd give an update on this.

Since adjusting the EPB shoes for the second time it's been working fine.
In fact, touch wood, it's been better than it ever has.
It really grabs on my steep drive, but the most amazing thing is how quiet both application and release are, quieter than it's ever been.

God only knows what was wrong the first time I put it all back together.

We'll see how long it lasts this time.
