Sudden Autobox slip
Hi all
Had a trawl of the forum but couldn't find much directly relating to the problem I've had this afternoon in my 195k V8.
Left work, all fine, going up a slight hill it felt like it was slipping so got to the junction at the top, put in park and back into drive. Pulled out and the engine was revving fine as I was trying to get up speed, but seemed stuck in first and only doing about 10mph even at 5000rpm. Eventually changed to second but still did the same. Turned it off and on and worked fine for the last mile of my journey.
It's a high miler, gear changes can be just a tiny bit notchy, but no judder whatsoever like I've had in previous D3s, and on hard acceleration the revs only fluctuate a very small amount.
No warnings on the dash, no untoward noises, just seemed to very suddenly start.
Has anyone else had this random, sudden issue? Random glitch or time to raid the piggy bank?
Cheers

When did you last do your trans fluid and filter service?

Could be the torque converter rather than the box.

My first thought was the TC but there haven't really been any major symptoms in the lead up to this, are sudden failures common?
I've only owned it it 4 months, but has a full service history, unsure if these included a trans service.
Not likely to have had a transmission service - but Geoff. is local (Ish) to you and can give it a proper flush, which will more than likely help - though if it is really old oil, flushing it can bring on a failure - but not one that wouldn't happen anyway at some point.Mark.

I feared that a transmission service wouldn't have been included. I was fairly keen for a flush but read about it possibly being detrimental on an old 'box.
Today I left her running while loading my tools in, then a 10 mile trip and it behaved faultlessly, hoping for the moment that it was a momentary glitch, but will keep an eye on it.

The hopelessly optimistic LR service schedule calls for an ATF change at 150k.
In reality it should have had 3 ATF changes by this kind of milage.
Getting to nearly 200k with a V8 twisting on it is good going. It probably needs specialist work on it now.

Yeah it certainly has done well so far!
Been using it today and its been fine, however I've now noticed a constant erratic clicking from within the glovebox fuse box... so will try and find some info on it before getting her pulled apart

the v8,s put a lot more torque through the box and a flush may help and prolong the inevitable but at that milage i would think its a box rebuild

Well bit of a weird one this!
Discovered that the fault only occurs when the car is started, then the tailgate opened to load it up, every time without fail! If I don't open the tailgate when it's running, it drives absolutely fine.
