D3 2.7v6 Battery Draining Overnight?? |
|
Hello guys. Long time observer, unfortunately I need to ask a question with my first post as I'm nearly beat.
Battery was dead on the discovery, so got the AA out and they diagnosed the alternator. Swapped the alternator for a brand new one, and the next day the battery is flat again. Back out comes AA man who condemns the new alternator? He also tested battery and said it was ok just needed charging.
The alternator is throwing out 14.2 volts but under load it does drop down to 13.6 which is rather low. So, I change it again for another new unit. Next day, the battery is again dead! So surely something must be draining the battery?
I put on multimeter and with the ignition off the car is drawing 8.49 on the 10a setting, so I set about pulling fuses. Low and behold, I pull out FL18, and it drops right down to 0.71, I think great, I've cracked it (although I'm not certain what that fuse controls) so I leave the fuse unplugged. But the next day the battery is dead again! Showing 12.2v but struggles to turn the engine.
I've currently got the battery on a slow charge, but I am concerned about the alternator dropping so low, and also confused as to what's happening in general.
Thanks guys.

Sounds like alternator has killed the battery, or it was the battery from the off. Alternator values above are fine, regularly see those numbers.
Though spoken as a non techie.

Thanks DSL. I've just had the battery tested at a factor, and although not 100% it passed the test with an 'OK' result. I've fully charged the battery now, I'm going to leave fl18 disconnected and see what the morning brings!

Save me finding my manual, which could be anywhere, what does F18 protect?

What battery do you have fitted?
And how old is it?

FL 18 I'm unsure what it covers specifically, but with it removed not a lot of the cabin electrics work, such as the power windows, heated seats and the sat nav. I left the fuse out overnight and it started this morning, and I've changed the battery over to a brand new Exide one now,the old one was the original so would be 7 years old 60.000 miles. So I'm going to plug the fuse back in and see.
Thanks guys
