Power Cable & Dual Battery

Hi Guys,

So I am about to undertake a dual battery installation as a DIY and want to run a cable to the back for the fridge and a few additional Hella plugs.

Does anyone have a recommended path where I would run the cable from the secondary battery to the back? The cable is about 8mm thick.

I will be posting a step by step guideline with photos for anyone who may be interested Smile

Sounds good - a few here have done this and converted a rear panel to have power sockets of all sorts including using an inverter to supply 240v.

I'm looking to do this but think it'll be a project for later in the year, early next.

I am in 2 minds about an inverter - I feel it add more fire hazzard to the vehicle. Would rather use my 300w lighter pluggable type and remove it when not needed.

Personal preference i suppose...

Remove rubber grommet in bulkhead and cut. So you can get wire through and then replace.
Comes in under steering wheel take across to door down kick panel. Lift plastic covers on top of sills wire will rest in there easy both front and rear door. Then up side of rear seats into rear panel area. Pull through from access hatch. Very easy

Awesome, thanks so much. I definitely think that is the route I will follow.

I am hesitant to do it along the chassis rails in the event that they need to remove the body from the chassis. I think that could complicate the entire process

Jetlag, do you have some pics of your installation please?

Hi Naks,

I went with the CTEK D250S as there were too many concerns about the alternator etc.

BRS Offroad did the installation for me - they are LR approved so no issues with Warranty.

Excuse the dirty car - she is seldom clean.

The battery is a Discover Energy Corp fitted onto a FrontRunner Bracket.

I have a cable running to the back with a Hella plug for the fridge.

Thanks Jetlag!

Couple of questions:

Where is the Ctek located? in the back of the vehicle?

Did you have to relocate/modify anything to make the 2nd battery fit in the engine bay?

How did you run cables to the back?

Thanks

No worries, will answer where I can. If you want photos of the CTEK I can take some the weekend.

Where is the Ctek located? in the back of the vehicle?
The CTEK is located in the "battery box" on the left which has all the ABS brake hoses. There is sufficient space for it there.

Did you have to relocate/modify anything to make the 2nd battery fit in the engine bay?
No Modifications at all. FrontRunner sells a bracket that fits right there.

How did you run cables to the back?
The cables seem to have been run inside the vehicle through the firewall along the left side under the skirting.

The CTEK has a Temperature sensor which monitors the engine bay temperature and cuts it if it gets too hot. So protected on that front.

Haven't had any issues to date and Ive taken the car into Botswana, Namibia, Moz. Driven through deep rivers etc.

Naks I went for a NL dual battery system (specific for the D4) with a trailer plug and two hella plugs in the rear. Its a fraction of the price of the CTEK and works just as well. (Ctek is R4k+ NL is R750)

Was fitted by Tino of G4 Accessories who do the fitting of accessories for Landrover.

No offence to anyone but I really dont understand why anyone would want to spend that on a Ctek which some instals have stopped fitting due to reliability issues of it being in the engine compartment, for very little extra benefit.
