Discovery 3 commercial ved /car tax confirmation
Hi Guy's n Girl's
Just bought a Discovery 3 commercial first registered 26.06.2006 ved on tax website says £485.00
I thought it was £290 or something like that as its a commercial with 2 seats only.
Is this right or as it's 249g output on emissions it ends up same as car disco 3
anybody shed any light?

why would you commercialize (spelt wrong) a car in to a commercial?
It was Disco Daz car he had on Ebay
he did mention it was £485 but I thought I would check

My commercial is classed by DVLA as a car.
It also comes up on the data base used by insurance companies as a car.
I phoned DVLA to query when I bought it and they said it was classed as a car from day one.
But I'm pretty sure it was sold as a commercial in the first place as the conversion is the same as other similar aged commercials, so was either done by LR in the factory, or by the original dealer.
I was told there were several loops to jump through or try to jump through to change the classification now.
I haven't bothered looking any further into it as it would then definitely mean the reduced NSL speed limits on single and dual carriageways. It may also affect my break-down cover.

Hi JMack
Thank you for your reply
I will pay the £485 as you have mentioned I did not think about speed limits etc
When I spoke to Insurance co they said it was registered as a car with 5 doors so did not query it.
Thanks again
John

In one word, tax. You get the VAT back and generous write down allowances. Plus LR took a bit of time to produce commercials.

My D3 was registered 31-06-06, so probably near yours on the production line.
My insurance company found commercials by looking at a later date, i.e. August '06, I think.
So it looks like our commercials weren't registered as such and LR only started registering them as comms later in the year. (or whenever it actully was...)
Have you got a mesh bulkhead behind the seats?

In order for a Commercial to be treated as such for tax etc, it HAS to leave the factory as a converted Commercial and therby be registered as an N1 vehicle from Day 1.
If, for any reason, it was originally registered as a car, there is no ability to 'backwards register' the car into becoming a commercial - there was a spate of third party conversions which appear to be commercial like but which, quite simply, ain't...
It isn't silver by any chance is it?
There was a big old hoo-ha when the AA guys working as dedicated LR rescue folks were running D3's which had the rear seats removed and a rake of kit in there... they appeared to be commercials but the taxman got the hump and charged them all Benefit in Kind on the vehicles. Just wondered if it might have been one of these...D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

If its a "D" on the 7th digit its a commercial and should have been registered as such. It could however be a conversion which is a possibility?Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

If you get an official headed letter from LR confirming it was a commercial when it left the factory the DVLA would then be able to change this for you.
Much like when they register the car inccorectly... apparently the FF i drive quite often is known to the DVLA and insurance types as an SSRR SC.... Be the earliest registered one if it was but it is actually a TD6 FF.... I have the letter confirming the incorrect info was entered by LR with my service pack and other documents for the vehicle but just haven't sent it off.FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

vin details & replies
Hi
Thanks for all of your help guy's
my vin reads SA LL AAA 176 A
And yes its silver & the odometer is in Kilometers, started its life in Ireland then came here in 2012
so it a tdv 6 without dpf & has 4 doors
it does have a mesh grill but all the screws securing it do not match up (different ones used) can't see landrover using different screws to fit the mesh grill! which leads me to believe it was possibly added later
question is this worth the fight with DVLA tax? any thougts

It started life as a car and was commercialised in Ireland then. That's how they did it, even to the point of destroying the 5 rear seats.
