Steering rack replacement? |
|
Hi folks, I have a 2005 tdv6 , I have notice a very slight clunk that I can feel through the steering wheel. I mostly notice this at low speeds but also when hitting potholes. It's not a thud or loud knock but it is like a click through the wheel. I have change the inner rods and ball joints but still remains. I did notice while changing the inner rods that the rack (toothed bar) has small bit of lateral movement. Is this normal? I don't think it is,so am thinking I need a new rack ? There are no leaks or any other issues with the steering. The lower arms are original at 100k so I will be replacing them as a matter of course. Has anyone ever replaced a rack before?

Try driving over rough ground. Does it sound and feel like a bag of spanners. Likely to be lower steering column as per above. I got mine through Advanced Factors. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Ok thanks guys, I'll check it over when it stops raining. I did shake the steering from side to side (with the engine off) and there is a noticeable clunk but seems to disappear when the engine is started?

Not all steering related clunks are lower steering column, it does get put forward as likely candidate a lot on the forum though.
Having changed mine the noise is still there
