You can't turn it on unless you have a specific diagnostic tool or a Webasto controller. It will auto start once the outside temperature is below 6 degrees as long as fuel in the tank is not low or engine is at full temperature

The Wiki is your friend:-

If the air con is off the FBH won't fire up.

If you need to reset your FBH in the first instance try pulling the fuze it's under the bonnet in the battery box, IIRC it is number 28.

Is that right that the FBH will not operate if the Air Con is off??

I am sure my FBH has worked over the years in the Winter with the Air Con off.

I rarely have the Air Con switched on in the Winter unless to demist when it is peeing with rain and we are all wet causing windows to mist up.

It will operate if the aircon is either on or off. It is only when the HEVAC panel is turned completely off will the FBH fail to fire, as it takes inputs from the HEVAC system - including the outside air temp.

Exhaust pipe is nearside at the front underneath - small pipe about 1/2 inch diameter
Dont touch it - gets very hot when the FBH is fired up but you should be able to see / smell smoke

Yip, agree with what's been said already.

I pulled the fuse the other day and after reinstalling, the heater fired up. First thing you'll notice is a smell like paraffin as the diesel is burned.

Exhaust is down below, and you should be able to see hot gas exiting.
