Your experiences? (new buyer content) |

Afternoon everyone,
Really keen on getting a disco 3. I sat in a 4 the other day and literally fell in love! a 4 is out of budget, but I can definitely afford to buy a 100k example of a 3.
I'm aware the running costs are high.. but I'm keen to find out on average how high?
I'm looking at buying an 8-9k example with cash I've saved up so no credit on the car itself, leaving regular funds for repairs hopefully spare.
I'm happy to be spending £500 every maybe 3-4 months sorting something, but if it's going to be a bill of that size every other month then I think I might have to look at an X5.
It won't have a hard life, or be doing much more than 8,000 mile pa
Any advice or pointers to look at when buying an 05/55 plate would be much appreciated too.
Thanks for any responses in advance, I've been told how helpful this community is so thought I'd post up as a potential owner.
Cheers
Paul

Just look for a well maintained car that is not messed about with. I've had my 06 from new and it has 140K miles on the clock, I would say £2Kpa would have easily covered my costs in the last few years, if you are good with tools then you could bring that down further (I am most definitely not!) Good luck with your search. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Recently sold my 57 plate D3 XS with 69000 miles for just over £9k. It was in lovely condition too.
Webuyanycar struggled to knock anything off the online offer price when I had it inspected so it was very straight.
It was due a belt service but they didn't seem to care about that, they ticked the full service history box when making the offer.
I guess all I'm saying is that it's worth benchmarking against a real buying service before you see one and then make a sensible offer based on Condition/History etc.

Welcome.
In answer to your question, how long is a piece of string?
You are looking at a mileage and age exactly the same as mine is now. When I'm in possitive mode I think mine is one of the most reliable motors I've ever owned as it has never let me down and then I look in the file I keep on the old girl and realise when you spend that much looking after a car it should never let you down
I'm not trying to put you off but be prepaired that routine maintenance does not come cheap on D3's. And routine maintenance on a D3 stretches way beyond your average vehicle. They like wearing out suspension components on relatively low mileages, certain brands of tyres do not seem to last long. The lecky side can be tricky, although they seem to fair much better than the earlier modern Landrovers. And don't expect more than mid to low 20's mpg around the houses, possibly low 30's on a run.
That said, buy one that's in the early stages of 2nd time around new components(like mine) and as long as you carry out basic maintenance you could have many years of happy ownership.
Having said all that, most people on here wouldn't be without them, they really are go anywhere cars that behave like a limo on the open road.
Good luck and hopefully you won't be dissapointed. Discovery 4 HSE

Thanks for the replies so far.
Is there a list of common faults/buyers guide anywhere on the forum?

I bought a 2005 SE about 6 months ago with 102k on it for £8,000. It needed new ARB drop links and the timing belt done, but besides a few minor cosmetic issues and new brake discs (which could happen to any car), that was it (it did develop a leak but that was down to things not being put back properly when the belt was done).
It took a bit of searching, but there are nice examples out there well under the 10 grand mark. Ant

I am new to a D3 and have spent quite a bit of money on it, mainly on preventative maintenance
But that’s because we intend to keep it for quite some time 8 to 9k miles a year for us, so when we replace parts it should in theory and that is just a theory last longer.
Look in the wiki section at the top of the page tons of info in it regarding common faults but I must say if you do buy one this is the BEST forum for help and advice some really good peeps on here.
Read as much as you can on here before you start the quest of finding one it helped me and pointed me in the right direction on what to look for and what to ask about.
I would advise if possible a pot of cash set aside at all times just in case it’s not a cheap car to run
But if it goes well you will fall in love with it and can be quite obsessive to own.
Good Luck
Andy

Like any car if cared for should be okay.
I bought mine last Dec 102k apart from servicing/pads/intercooler hose/cambelts/gearbox oil and filter basically all service stuff, its had new air con pipe, second hand mirror motor and er thats it, all repairs done by me so only parts cost to worry about and that makes a huge difference.
If I had to pay for labour Im pretty sure I would not own one, not because I cant afford it more Im a tight git!
Some of the parts I changed were based on experience on this forum ie brake light switch and bulbs before they failed/rear gas strutt fixings loose and loads of other great tips along the same lines, most zero cost.
Engine cold start tinkle has now got louder so thats next on the list, again paying someone to have a look see would be pretty expensive, with me its just time and hassle and quite frankly I cant be arsed
Mate had X5 turbo went at about 120k repair guy said they all do that, cost over 2k.
