At least when it's ticking you know she's working. When you can't hear the ticking be afraid, be very afraid.

I wouldn't worry too much.
Any car as it ages is going to need more spent on it, simple reality of having to deal with parts wearing out etc.
The largest costs with them is the bushes, they take a hammering and as such wear out.
Mine was bought with just under 98k on the clock. It's sitting at 142k now just over 3 years later.
I've been VERY meticulous with looking after it, it's had a full refresh of the brakes and wishbones, it's only got genuine parts fitted after getting burnt on lesser makes. I've an AMK waiting to go on it and now i have the IID tool. I'll be sorting that out soon before the winter takes hold.
It's let me down once due to the starter motor dying, one too many mud baths finished that off at 9 years old.
It needs the box and TC renewed as they have bad judders and a oil flush only made it worse..
I have one injector to change as it's running high.
Otherwise it's fine and happy.
I'm going to run it till 200k and maybe further. It does everything i need so will keep looking after it.
I've found that the cars that get used a lot, are in general more reliable than those that sit about. In loving memory of FA54WSK.

You will not see many people here saying how great the car is running, usually the problems are reported.
My 2004 D3 has been with me for 6 years now and I have covered 200000 kms in it. I have never felt as safe and comfy in a car before and it still makes me smile when I drive it.
Surely it has had problems, ranging from lowering suspension to a faulty fuel sensor.
The only thing that has been annoying was a faulty height sensor which makes the suspension drop to the bump stops whilst driving. The other niggles have not left me standing.
There has not been another car that I have tried to defend when it breaks.

Had my 05 since new. Now on 165,000 miles. Stranded once when a coolant hose came off that was not fitted properly by garage that did my 105k service. Hope I don't regret typing this.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
134k in mine over 5 years in my ownership. Left stranded twice - both this year. Failed alternator and a injector return hose fell off and was cheaper to get recovered than the fuel on the floor
But I have had a new engine, rebuilt gearbox usual bushes and arms as well as hp pump (under warranty)
But it also gets used properly and has done a fair bit of off roading over the years.Mark.

Fantastic to see these responses.. it is great to see the long term ownership coming through with high mileage. I hope I get to see the same great use and confidence that you guys have, just have had my confidence knocked a little since my ownership issues earlier this year along with the major reported engine failure on the 4x4 forum in SA..
Please keep the feedback coming... Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

I have heard of a few engines snapping cranks, in both D3 and also RRS models.
Both here in the UK and also in SA.
I don't personally believe it's a common issue and as the link says, likely a small faulty batch.
How you identify what cars are in the batch is beyond me.
We know that cars in the 07-08 range should have the oil pump changed for safety as there is an issue with them.
A friend bought a 07, full main dealer history and belts done. I bet him a cookie the pump hadn't been changed, when he checked it, the pump hadn't been changed and had cracks on it.
I'm still waiting on that cookie...
As the link says, any car past 7 years and still going will likely still go strong as the chances of failure would be low.
My car gets used for all sorts, from towing, to off roading to general duties.
I put an Advanced Factors service kit on it every 10k. For £85 it's peace of mind. I've done it 3 times and the cars yet to complain.
Next service will see both coolant and brake fluid change. In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Mine is a 2008 2.7 TDV6 GS Automatic, I have owned it from new and it has been serviced meticulously. 142,000 miles on the clock now and it's running like a charm. Issues I have had over and above standard servicing in 7 years...
1. EPB Failure - replaced under warranty @30K Miles.
2. EGR valve failed - replaced it myself @80K Miles.
3. Passenger side drive shaft replaced due to split gaiter and damaged CV joint @110K Miles.
4. Front lower suspension arms, bushes and ball joints replaced @110K.
5. New steering track rods and rack ends @ 110K
6. Automatic transmission double flush and filter change @120K (fixed judders).
7. New battery recently.
Since the 105K major service I now do oil & filter services at 7K miles. Differential and transfer box fluids replaced more frequently now too.
It's never let me down, never needed recovery, as reliable as anything else of its size out there I think.
