My Cat seems to be the problem !

After a few posts regarding a rattle under the car which I've lived with for a few months as I've been busy with moving house and too much work Whistle i actually got the car in today with a local indie that I've used a few times in the past ,After previously changed the ARB bushes and added spacers with no joy (rattle still there Evil or Very Mad ) ,
After a good look around today the indie is convinced its the cat falling to bits Shocked and said its is expensive part and not the easiest of jobs to change Big Cry ,
Anyone changed one ? whats involved and how difficult and labour intensive it ?
Ive done a search and looked at the de cat option but wondered how this works with the MOT emissions etc !!
Id rather fit a new cat if poss but all down cost etc , would a new full exhaust be easier ?

It's a simple enough job, but the manifold nuts can get stuck, and if a stud breaks... I think it's important to make sure it's someone who's done it before and/or has a good feel for it. With no snapped studs, it should only be an hour or so in labour. Thumbs Up

De-cat would save a lot of money. You can get ones with dummy cats, but even without, it's often not noticed. Alternatively, the cat can be cut open, the internals removed and welded up again. Wink

Have you checked the wheel bearings. On my D3 I had a metallic rattle, which sounded nothing at all like a failing wheel bearing. It was though.

Hi Darryl,

I didnt think a cat on a diesel was a requirement for MOT in the UK, only on a petrol. I would have thought decat option would have been cheaper than a new cat, or full exhaust.

de-cat pipes seem to be 100 quid ish:

Used to be petrol only, but a check now applies to diesels too. Thumbs Up

Not being hugely visible though...

Not that I have tried on a D3 but on a lot of vehicles you can drop the exhaust off the rubber hangers and give it a good shake to confirm the rattle. The cat can also be checked for correct operation with a cheap IR temp gun.

Thanks for replies , the car had a wheel bearing on passenger side not long before i got it last December and I've had the drivers side done about 2 months ago using a timken bearing , looking at the price of the first one that was done previous to me owning it it certainly wasn't one of the better ones Whistle , will look at that one just in case Thumbs Up ,
I get what you mean with the bolts and someone who knows there stuff as suppose can be a right nightmare if they snap , but never thought of the cut open and get the broken bits out , il put this to em Thumbs Up see what he thinks ,
Whats the cost of a new one ? would it be a waste of time getting second hand ? i see metal monster junk have one £180 Rolling Eyes

Doing good thanks Darryl.

no prob, just did a quick ebay search to see what "the going rate" might be.

Its always a pain with a rattle, my old man has one on his Citroen. Different garages think its different things. John (our friend in blackheath) is going to change the waterpump for him on monday, but it might not be that. You can throw a lot of money at trying to sort a rattle out.

Good luck

Al

Lespes , yes i was at the indies about 5 today under it on the ramps all seems ok , can't understand as he was shaking cat and it needed some umph to make it rattle and to me didn't seem like the same noise , i don't get chance to get it that warm these days as I'm in van all week and swmbo drives it short journeys to work , if its the cat would it be better when hot ?

I also changed all the ARB bushes to no avail. My rattle was caused by a single worn joint on just one drop link. Rolling Eyes

It's interesting to me to find the history of names. Blackheath is a community just west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains. Where is the original?

Best Wishes,

there would be loads of "Blackheath's" around the world, as I would have thought it originally just referred to a dark area of heathland.
