Morning all,
For the past week i have noticed my D3s RPM fluctuates when started from cold.
It only does it when it's driven though. The dealer said it was a blocked air filter which they have replaced yesterday. However, driving to work this morning it felt exactly the same. The RPM was fluctuating but on a lesser extent though.
Any ideas? Could it be a leaking hose or something?
Thanks alot.

Does it still happen with the aircon switched off? Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?

Is it fluctuating only when pulling under moderate power? or are you talking about the revs fluctuating at idle? Does it go away when its warmed up?

When ambient is 40C, it's already warmed up prior to starting (an effect some Aussies and most Middle Easterners, but not many Poms are familiar with). On the petrol engine, could it be a vapour lock? I've never had this occur here (we only get to 43C so far), but maybe got a bit of funny fuel. Does it happen early in the morning at start-up or get more noticeable as things warm up? I have seen mine "hunt" a bit for RPM after the transmission has "learned" to drive lightly, but pulling a trailer or driving in Sport Mode usually solves this. Does it happen under acceleration? I know a few guys (including myself) have surging revs when accelerating, getting the double flush is meant to relieve this - not had mine done yet though. There is a big thread on it here somewhere, try searching for double flush? D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Tell me about it 8)
It actually only occurs when pulling away under moderate power not exceeding 2000 RPM and it does go away once it's warmed proper (temp. guage in the centre)

I would be pretty confident saying you need the gearbox oil changed. Search for +double +flush and read the threads for more info. Unfortunately its a bit pricey to do, as the oil is expensive.

I think this could be normal - I too had the same question about the revs 'floating' before the engine/gearbox had fully warmed up.
I think it was Gareth that told me it's normal and I've not worried about it since.
It only happens when I start the D3 after 8-10 hours of not driving it and then driving it straight on the motorway (my office is 200m from the motorway slip-road) - you can feel the revs hunting or floating (as though it was a manual with a slipping clutch) for around 1km or so - then it all goes back to normal.
If the symptoms don't sound similar to what I've just described then it could be the infamous D3 auto-judder and need a gearbox flush...

But Gareth, my D3s gearbox is only a couple of months old, as it has been replaced under warranty by LR.
Is it possible that it needs an oil change that fast?

No, but now you have told me its had a new gear box, my advice would be to take it back and let them sort it out.
Paul. You are referring to the torque converter lockup which is disabled until the oil in the box reaches a certain temperature. The effect it that the revs drop to idle and you have no engine braking when you coast along on a cold engine. When warm you have full engine braking.

That is exactly what I did. After two weeks at LR, they told me it's a blocked air filter which they have replaced.... It took them two whole weeks to figure that out!! However it is still fluctuating!
I am so frustrated at how LR treats thier customers. I have submitted an official complaint this morning against the service advisor for being so rude and for not knowing how to fix the car the first time in.
This is not the first time i have compained. The first time was when my gear started to jerk. I have took the car to them at least 8 times and they have failed to fix it. After only a couple of days of my complaint I was phoned by the service manager to give me the good news... a new gearbox.

Got a call late yesterday afternoon from LR. It's a faulty ECU, which they were able to fix/replace. They'll have it delivered to me today.

Did you get any fault codes that pointed you to the ecu? Do you know which ecu it was and how they diagnosed it?
I am having similar symptoms
Cheers
