Extremely slow to pull away / accelerate when cold

I've recently been having problems with my 06 plate TDV6 SE, but only when its cold outside.

Starting it up, it smells like it is overfuelling - there is quite a strong smell of burnt diesel as I reverse to get out of the drive - this doesnt happen when its warm outside.

Then pulling away is a non-event.... It takes many seconds to get the revs up to 2000+ and then it starts to pull almost normally, but until it gets to this point there is lots of black/grey smoke out the back.

After the car warms up (about 5 minutes) this disappears and normal service resumes.

If you stop the car and start it again before its warm you get the same symptoms. If you restart the car some times after its stopped, but the engine is still warm to the touch (so 40 mins or so) then its normal service.

Last night I parked in an underground car park, and the 'outside' temp was 10 degrees and it didnt happen.

Im at a loss to explain this... no warning lights or engine management light

?crappy diesel that doesnt like the cold?
?EGR (but why would this get better when its warm)
?sticking turbo?...

Any ideas please do let me know...

As a side note, how long does it usually take the oil light to go off after a cold start?... mine is between 2 and 3 seconds, with a warm start its almost immediate?

Thanks in advance

James

I would have thought they should last a lot longer than that! Why don't you just blank them off like I and many others on here have done!

Does it start ok ?. Or does it crank for longer than normal then fire up and run rough until it starts to warm up ? Possible glow plug concern Idea

starts ok - no hesitancy, within about half a second of starting to crank over.
