Good evening. Some advice needed please. I have just purchased a discovery 3 two days ago. It's the automatic with 2.7tdv6, with 105k miles. Whist driving home this evening I noticed that there was a lot of black smoke coming from the exhaust whilst under load. I also noticed this morning when I first started the car that there was a bit of black/blue smoke but just put it down to a reasonably cold start this morning. After reading through the forum I found information relating to the main intercooler pipe splitting. The pipe I'm looking at is 3 inches in diameter and goes from the top of the engine down to the inter cooler itself. Immediately when I opened the bonnet there was signs of oil misting from a tiny spilt after the jubilee clip. The oil had spread from there all over the engine cover. A small patch of oil had also appeared on the ground. I removed the small plastic cover at the bottom of the engine to reveal where the other end of the pipe connects to the intercooler. This end of the pipe was covered in oil.
Is it normal for this pipe to contain quite a bit of oil considering it should only have air in it. Does this indicate an issue with the turbo oil seals. The vehicle has just had the timming belt changed along with all idlers and tensioner and water pump which I negotiated in the sale of the vehicle. I have all receipts to prove this has been done.
I have 6 months warranty supplied by the dealer for engine and gearbox issues. Should the vehicle ideally be recovered to the workshop. I have checked the oil level and it is on min. The vehicle was serviced as part of the sale also so I'm assuming it has used a bit of oil or has lost it via the leak.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

Oil is normal, google closed crankcase breather systems.
Cars have had closed systems for years, trucks have just moved onto it with euro6.
As an experiment on my old tdi engine I routed the breather pipe to atmosphere, now roughly 4 years later the intercooler pipework is still spotless.
Replace the split i/c hose and see how it runs. Unless you're getting continuous blue smoke then it's not a problem - at that mileage a bit of oil from the turbo and crankcase vent system is normal. My D4 (112k miles) collects a small amount of oil in the bottom of the intercooler which the engine will burn eventually.Previously:

Thanks for the very quick replies. I will replace this pipe and see how it goes. Is the vehicle ok to drive in the short term until I get the replacement pipe.
Many thanks

Not really advisable as the turbo will have nothing to work against, ie nothing to govern it.
Might be time for a bodge with some tin plate and jubilee clips?
I would say its a stock item at your local dealer if you have not got time for a silicone one, the silicone ones have failed as well!
Easy enough to change the hose no need to go to the garage.

If you bought it from a dealer/trader then they should repair it for you.

That is correct but its a lot of faffing around with no car and its not like it is an expensive part.
