Sat Nav

Can anyone tell me if satnav will work through the heated front screen of a D3, or do i need an external antenna?

I have a Garmin 276C.

Thanks

My Road Angel works. So in theory, yes.

There is also a little cubby hole on the passenger side dash at the corner of the screen for a GPS receiver, which is outside of the heated screen, as this is where my receiver is for my Origin B2 - works great Thumbs Up

Like sturox, I have a B2 gps in that cubby but if you look at the screen, there are no elements at either side so a tomtom or similar works just fine, infact lots of folk have a tomtom or similar mounted in the centre cubby (where the LR nav screen would be) and again, no problems reported

All sat nav systems with internal antennas will be effected by the heater wires in the glass. Some will work, but the signal will be greatly increased if you use an external antenna. Sat navs can be a real pain if they have a poor signal - e.g. putting your location on a different street. You can get an external antenna on eBay for only about £5.
Or mount the sat nav in the edge of screen where there are no wires in the glass.

I've just got an TomTom One Version 2 and it is a brilliant device and picks up the GPS location very fast and is very accurate. It works well in the Defender even when no where near the glass (i.e. in footwell, on lap etc). Got in from Carphone Warehouse online for £149 delivered.

I have a TomTom 910 in the centre dash cubby (where the original goes), once locked onto the GPS it reads at full strength signal. It does sometimes take a while to get the lock though, I have not found the need to add an external antenna.

My 276 will work most of the time , but only if I first acquire the signal outside the car

I have an external antenna for my Garmin 276C. I found that in heavily wooded areas and city centres signal would drop. The city centre is not a big problem as you are driving down roads and they have sign posts. Woods are a bit different and if you have to follow your breadcrumb trail back you need the GPS working at full strength with the smallest accuracy circle you can get.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
