SPARK PLUGS FOR D3 AND RRS |
|
NGK IFR5N-10......These are the reccommended plugs for our V8. Equivalent are supposed to be Champion OE180. I have tried Champ and NGK dealers without success. Was sold Champ OE124 by well known LR parts dealer as the correct plug !! Was told by Champ man that if I used the 124 plug I would "possibly" get missfire, if not when new then within 5000 klm. Took these back to dealer who almost called me ##@@++ for not using them. The correct plugs are iridium plugs and the OE124 are platinum which are half the price and will last 20% of the life if lucky ( latter is opinion of champ man ).
QUESTION is - where to get the right plug ? According to dealer NGK haven't brought these into SA yet !!! Not managed to get a human to talk too at NGK so cannot confirm this BUT, where do you guys buy your plugs in SA ???
By the way, originals have been in my wagon for 124 000 klm so I am very keen to get the right one for replacements. Life always good with a Landy

SOLVED !! NGK do not bring in IFR5N-10 ( These are available in UK, OE ) but have the IFR5G-11 here and tell me the only difference is length change of 0.1mm which is OK. This plug can be purchased at all MIDAS and AUTOZONE..........according to NGK. Will now put that to the test. Life always good with a Landy

Hi PSC, Began to think I was the only one left !!
The old plugs were very good, slightly coloured yellow with some signs of black dust on end ring. They were a little wet but I expected this as I have almost completed a major service and spent two days on it with stop/start to take her out of garage and reverse back in etc, during this time. There was zero erosion and all plugs still measured exact gaps. This is my first experience of Iridium plugs but the old ones looked so good I've kept them for possible future use due to cost - R1600 / 8.
Further info' I found is that the Iridium plug requires less power to run than "other" types although I see that LR do allow "others" to be used but change times are reduced. Don't think I would like to be in middle of Bots and missfires start.
To change the plugs I had to make special tool - modified standard 3/8 socket bits - No 2 and 7 plugs needed further modification in length due to less accessability but all went well - The standard 3/8 x 16mm plug socket was just right to fit the plugs and was great at starting the thread on new ones as it fitted the entry hole and lined the plug up well. The rubber gripper within the socket I used was just right - not too much grip, just enough to lift plug out of deep reccess. I used "Mastercraft" set.
This Jag engine is a b....y great unit to work on ( if you are not in hurry !). Life always good with a Landy

Thanks, for the detailed reply
Now that you have ascertained where and what to get - I see thet the 5L engine takes a differnt plug (ILKAR6C10 ?) , at least if they last as long as your set I should be fine ...

Thanks,
Probably an essential part of an overlanding toolbox. Need to check what tools will be required to replace the plugs.

Spark plugs are supposed to last between 144000 and 160000kms. At previous service (96000kms) the Indie checked it and found that it was still good. will have it checked again when it goes for the next service in 2 weeks time.

Hi Vnitos, According to my LR maintenence list "Low cost spark plugs should be changed every 15 000 ml ( 24 000 klm" and reccomended plugs - Iridium are supposed to be changed every 45 000 ml ( 72 000 klm. I changed mine out of possible sequence as I purchased my D3 used and have a gap between 70 000 and 90 000klm in the service history. I do not think they were changed at 72 000, hence my surprise at the good condition of those I removed.

Hi Croucher, those from Dover I think are standard type plugs and not iridium. They can be used but will not give the life and performance of iridium plugs. My original LR plugs (iridium ) lasted 125 000 klm and looked very good - so good I am keeping for back-up. I think iridium are well worth the price - I paid R 200 per plug so if Brit 4x4 are just over R1000 a set I will be buying there next Life always good with a Landy
