Is My Compressor Salvageable

I got the amber warning light about a week ago and ordered a compressor refurbishment kit for the fitted Hitachi unit. I thought if I am going to replace the dryer end cap I might as well do the piston rings and seals while it is off the vehicle.

I got the compressor off but not without shearing off one of the screw in the cast alloy mounting bracket. (Issue 1)

I could not release the colletts on the hoses at the compressor end whilst the compressor was still fitted so I cut the pipes close to the unit.

I fitted the drier kit, filters desiccant etc no problems.

I fitted the piston kit, more difficult and roughed up the clamping ring on the piston a bit but it smoothed out and hopefully will be OK (issue 2 maybe)

I have come to try to release the collets and one brass ring on one of the collet has broken off. The collet is inserted into a piece that looks like it should undo so I tried to undo it. It was really stiff and I got it to move about a turn and it seized solid. I finally managed to get it to tighten up again but it looks on the P_ss. Not sure how I can get the collets out.(issue 3)

So I thought I would undo the square black access hatch to see if I could see what is going on. One of the screws sheared off in the alloy housing (issue 4)

So with all these issues is there any hope this compressor will go back together again ? or am I best to quit and buy a replacement AMK unit?

It's humped. The threads will be damaged in the compressor housing, which is a very common issue, and is why I don't refurb them.

Oh well, it was worth a try,

I see there are some Dunlop manufactured ???? compressors around. Should i fit AMK or one of these?

From memory the threaded holes are not blind, so easy to drill out with a normal bit.

Thumbs Up

Dunlop's are reasonably priced, but they have not been around long enough to judge reliability

In addition, if you need a new bracket and/or cover, it gets close to the price of a complete AMK kit

As the AMKs have worked so well it's hard to move away from them.

33 months, and 60k miles since my AMK was fitted, with no issues whatsoever. It is hard to see past them...
