fuel sender 2

2005 D3D at 100000 miles. Fuel gauge reads zero but full tank. FAULTMATE shows circuit component failure on fuel sender 2. Looks like a tank out job, but has anyone some guidance before I begin - and which if the senders is '2'?

John,

Sorry I can't help with which sender is number 2. If it is the rear one, it is tank out, disconnect the pipes, remove cap. Pull out the fuel pump, and the sender is attached to that. It is a relatively easy job, just a pain in the rear end.

John, Is there an actual fault code?

Wondering whether a google search would highlight which sender?

I had this on ours tank full but zero on the gauge. sometimes it would go into limp mode. Had it looked at and they said the sender connections corrode and would need the tank dropping for repair, not on this one. It turned out to be a cable which had been caught and the insulation broken so it corroded and when it was wet caused a fault. They repaired it all good since that.

Thanks for the replies. Code is B1A76. Robbies guide is great, but does not cover senders as such. Corroded loom is next to check, which I believe runs behind the offside rear wheel arch liner. Could someone confirm please? Will also try a bang on the tank in case the sender is stuck. More input would be welcome. Other half not happy with my old Focus; I'm guessing D3 fine to drive but she suffers fuel gauge anxiety.

John,

I will trawl through my workshop guide see if I can find the code, I have just removed a serviceable one due to a broken float. I will test the resistance and let you know the figure you might be able to find it that way.

I think off top of my head it is connected at the front drivers side behind wheel arch cover. I can check wiring diagrams on Sunday.

Thanks Adam, but problem has gone away. I exposed the connectors behind the rear of the front offside wheel arch liner, and waggled the wires- there was no obvious physical damage. After a bit I got a position in which the gauge worked (at least it showed full scale-but the tank is full so not clear if I have an open circuit). Couldn't get the fault again despite waggling and pulling the wires, so it is back together for now. I guess I have to wait until the fault reappears.
It would be great if someone could post the wiring and explain the functionality of the senders. The right hand plug has a thick wire (for the pump?) and a thin wire (for the senders?) going in, and one thick wire and two thin coming out. I am guessing the the thin wires go one to each sender.

Dear all,
I also had the dreaded " B1A76 FUEL SENDER 2 CIRCUIT " fault in my V8 D3. and would be very grateful if you could shed some light on:
-Is it the front or rear sensor?
-If it's the front (I've got skinny arms, can I reach the front sensor dispensing with the costly tank replacement opiton?
-The front sensor is held in place by a kind of "pull strap" plus 2 locating pegs, hope to be able to refit in the right place (after all, somebody manages to squeeze that in the tank in the manufacturing process)
-HAs anybody taken this sensors apart to see what and where is the fault? I mean
-corrosion in the inner tank harness
-resistors dead (difficult, but could be, in theory this is kind of "magnetic-duh-duh-something which prevents wear from old-style sliding tracks)
-Or just the cheapo plastic 3 piece float which becomes porous and sinks?
(I recall, even being off topic, the "low coolant warning" caused by a chepo float which became porous and sank)

I will perform a post mortem autopsy, but will have to wait some months. And will be exchanging both sensors, just in case, as it's not the prettiest job to do
Best regards
Robert
