TC Judder now really bad! Replacement time?

Long story short, I bought my 06 D3 around February last year at ~98k. Not long after I had it I started to experience a bit of the TC judder but fairly mildly. I put some Dr. Tranny in it and all was well for a while.

Last September time I decided to do a 'Fillo Style' Flush with Millermatic ATM DM.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261341018820?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Car was fine until about a 4 weeks ago (At ~115k) when the judder started to appear again gradually. After a week, I put in another tube of Dr. Tranny before going out for the day with a fair bit fo driving involved. Needless to say the judder got much worse... like driving over cobblestones etc.

I have recently replaced the filter with the steel sump version and put in ~ 7 litres of new Millermatic again and to my disappointment the judder remains.

Now the Millermatic was a bit of a risk as its not OEM, but I had seen in more than one location that it was supposed to be as good as the Shell varient. But who know if this has exacerbated the issue.

In any case I think I now need at least a new Torque Converter and/or a gearbox rebuild.

Any suggestions welcome on whether a gearbox rebuild would be necessary and also what the associated costs may be. Not the best timing as I we have just come back from holiday - so more skint than usual!

Any forum members in the Aberdeenshire area fancy doing the work? Wink

Doesn't sound good but hopefully its not terminal. On my d2 I had the gearbox rebuilt by a place in Arbroath but cannot seem to find them now. Was a little garage behind ATS I think. Top job they did, new clutches, torque converter etc not too bad on price either.

Sounds very similar to mine - I ended up with an outbox rebuild & a new TC Big Cry

On the plus side, it's transformed the car & the gear changes are so smooth now.

Don't leave it too long, or you will end up with a gearbox rebuild, regardless.

I have "limped" my box for the last 40k miles, and it really is on its last legs now, and it completely Censored

Mine was very similar so I replaced the TC and did not touch the Gearbox and now it drives superbly!

The clutches burn if left too long.

Clutch packs burn and wear, which contaminates the oil, valve block arteries become clogged, and seals begin to perish. It's a vicious cycle that only gets worse...

Not that it helps, but I'm in the same boat at the moment. Think I'm gonna have the TC done and gearbox rebuilt at the same time. Think it's worth it while the gearbox is out to get it rebuilt.

Generally speaking about £1k ish for a recon TC and about £2.2k ish for rebuilt with the TC.

Not a cheap one!

Mackie transmissions in Glasgow quoted me £3404 for a recon box, new tc, new oil cooler and pipework, labour and vat.
Lifetime warranty with the work done.

Bristol Transmissions quoted £1100 for a tc removal and change, new filter, oil, labour etc.
Not got a quote for a box build yet.

Mine has been juddering for a long time. I have a feeling it's going to be expensive as well. Big Cry

Rest well old friend, your work is done.

The reason I couldn't find the garage was because its actually in Forfar and not Arbroath. They're called Charles Butler Motor Engineers:http://charlesbutlermotor-forfar.co.uk/garage-services/3160650

When my D2 was in he was reconditioning a number of x5 gearboxes for a garage in Aberdeen. The setting is slightly off putting but couldn't fault his work at the time. Might be worth a call.

Charles Butler will refurbish D3 torque converters, for a very reasonable price, I believe.

Not sure if they will remove the gearbox though...
