To extend,or not to extend....
that is the question...
3-years is up at the beginning of April, and I got the extended warranty offer through yesterday.Well, when I say "offer" there is no amount quoted,it's just a request to give them a call to discuss if I want to take it out (with the option of LRA) and payment options.
The car will be going in for a thorough check-up before it runs out.
Any recent experiences (good or bad) of the Extended LR Warranty would be appreciated before I give them a bell, and is there any room for "negotiation" ? "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I took it out on both mine with LRA, Had no issues everything that's been a problem has gone through under warranty no problem,
If you get recovered to a dealer and they need to order a part you get a hire vehicle from enterprise to replace yours, I was given a RRS and a Disco on the 2 occasions. MY18 RRS Autobiography Fuji White

I'm on my 3rd year of using the LR extended Warranty, and in my opinion it's worth the money and peace of mind.
I myself have definitely got my money back, I pay £1060 I think with the LR assistance MY18 D5 HSE LUX😎

If you take the LR one, do you need to keep taking it to a dealer or can you use any VAT registered garage?
Just asking as I will be following along a few months later, when I might want DM to do servicing and repairs rather than the clowns some of these dealers employ.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

When I had dealings with the Approved LR warranty, it was administrated by Car Care, who deal with VAT registered companies

Think I'll extend...
Was in getting my car checked over today, and an almost identical car was being washed ready to be picked up (62 plate HSE).
Casually asked what it was in for.....complete new engine was the answer
The bottom end had failed, and they showed me photos of what it looked like when they took it to bits .....
Don't know what the mileage was,but I think they've scared me enough to extend my warranty "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

On the last D3 my service manager convinced me that I would not know the difference between the OEM 3 year and LR extended ...he would make sure of it Never got to make use of it though 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I stopped paying out on extra warranties over 15 years ago and just put the money in a dedicated account.
We have had all repairs, a number of holidays and money towards my daughter's education out of that account. We are not paying someone's wages, profit margin or losing any flexibility on where to get stuff repaired.
If you can survive the monetary risk of a major failure in the first few years then 'self insuring' is the way ahead in the long term; but I appreciate that not everyone is in that position or can stop SWMBO from spending the money.

I had already asked the question, and pretty much got the same reply,he completely recommended the extended LR warranty.....and then showed me the photos to convince me further......
And they also told me a story of an engine going bang, within the warranty period,to find out the recommended service schedule had not been followed rigorously......somebody learned a very expensive lesson "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I agree with Robbie. And now that the first D3's are over 10 years old and D4's not in the first flush of youth there is a wealth of information out there that makes looking after these beasts easier every year.
I had one of the first off the line back in 2005 and that went wrong so many times that on it's 3rd birthday I got rid. Not even main dealers inspired confidence back then in diagnosing and repairing (do they now!!!) let alone independents. Internet was not what it is today and looking after a D3 yourself back then with so much new technology seemed daunting.
Wind the clock forward and with the help of forums like this I feel a lot happier running a 2005 D3 in 2015 than I did in 2005
Warranties are for worst case scenarios like blown engines and whilst it happens it seems to be quite rare especially with regular maintenance.Discovery 4 HSE

peace of mind I would have thought...they are complicated bits of kit and if the .hit hits the fan it can be expensive.

When my D4 clicked over the 3 year warranty period a nice chap on the service desk said that someone would contact me shortly to discuss the extended warranty. Nobody did and that was 2 years ago, saved myself over £2k Club Exped trailer

And that's warranties in a nutshell.....expensive if you don't use/need them, cheap if you do ...there are valid arguments on both sides "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

The warranty companies have done their research, odds are you wont make a claim, it's more of a peace of mind question really.Club Exped trailer
