Africa outside edge expedition - one net one life

OK the cat's outta the bag. We will be joining Kingsley Holgate's latest adventure - the one net one life Africa outside edge expedition. Essentially Kingsley and his group will be handing out mosquito nets, performing cataract operations, and fitting spectacles to remote villages all around the coast of africa.
We will be along for the adventure, but only for 2 weeks Sad

The Landy got branded today. A couple more stickers to go, like the Cooper Tyres, but I reckon it looks the dog's dangles:

Crying or Very sad
I know. They need the vehicle for 3 days, and with all the other stuff going on I haven't managed to do it. I had to reschedule the tank till Monday too.

Do you guys wanna reschedule our "meeting" till Wednesday next week so you can see the tank?

Sounds like a great adventure and an even better cause. Nice one, Baben Thumbs Up 8)

What's the story behind the trip? Do you provide help or sponsorship?

Hi Stu

Actually my friend Paulo & I were invited to join the expedition so that we could accompany another D3 driven by a Nando's guy from Luanda on the return trip. Otherwise he would have had to drive back alone, which is crazy.
Nando's and Captain Morgan are the main event sponsors, and Cooper Tires are also involved. My company (4G Technology) is sponsoring me.

Kingsley is a legend in this part of the world - have a look at http://www.kingsleyholgate.co.za/e_outside...cle01.html

for more information.

This is by no means his first humanitarian voyage, and hopefully not the last.

Quote:
Kingsley Holgate and his family team are to set off to circumnavigate the continent in a world-first Land Rover and inflatable boat journey, clockwise through 33 countries around the outside edge of Africa. The team is to continue wit the One Net One Life campaign to distribute tens of thousands of mosquito nets to pregnant mothers and to children under the age of five and will also assist the poor sighted with spectacles and deliver educational aids to remote schools – so saving and improving lives.

Shocked That's some trip! When you said around Africa, I didn't realise you meant AROUND Africa Bow down He certainly looks a character. Good luck for your 2 week bit Baben - hope it goes ok Thumbs Up (How far round will you get in that time?)

That's the one.

In 2 weeks I doubt we will get very far. I think the guys are now in the skeleton coast of Namibia - this after 4 weeks leaving from cape town.
But what the hay, its gonna be some fun, and its for a good cause

OK - we are back in one piece - awesome trip!

We only had time to get to Namibe, which is about 230km north of the Cunene river mouth & some 750km short of the target, which was Luanda, but a good time was had by all, and we certainly made a difference in some youngster's lives, which was the point.

Watch the following websites for updates, there will be a few groups joining the expedition on and off:

http://www.outsideedge.co.za/
http://www.getawaytoafrica.com/content/blo...%20Pinnock

Oh, and the D3 - didn't miss a beat. We had some overheating of the suspension compressor, but this was self-inflicted, and recovered after a beer stop. From Namibe to Lubango the road is perfect, and then there's the Leba mountain pass, which words can't describe. The road from Lubango to Ondjiva is without a doubt the worst you (n)ever hope to experience. (200km in 7 hours is not fun)
For anyone wanting to do Angola - my advice is go now before the hordes arrive, but take someone who speaks portuguese otherwise you may find the red tape overwhelming.
Diesel was available in all towns, and they are building service stations next to the main routes, like our "shell ultra" stations. Diesel about R3.00 a litre!

Welcome back !!

Welcome back Baben !

I am sure you will be sharing some photo's with us. Good to hear that the "Blue stallion" did you proud.

Any idea how much weight you were carrying in total ?

Did the freebee Land Rover experience course yesterday - did not expect much, but it was great ! especialy the last rock climb where the 4 D3's out did the Defender and showed it's awesome traction control capabilities.
