al-ko stabliser and quick release tow bar (KNB500013) |
|
Hi All,
I'd like to buy a tow bar and like the look of the quick release towbar.
Will this be suitable to use with my Swift 510 Challenger and al-ko aks 3004 stabiliser?
With my td5, I had to change the lr supplied towball to an al-ko one to get the required vertical clearance for the stabiliser head to rotate correctly.
I can't seem to get a definitve answer from al-ko or lr.
Thanks In Advance

I have a quick release towbar and have an Alko 3004 on my Bailey, no problems at all been using this for 18 months and 2 weeks in France last summer.
Caravan's been serviced recently and they didn't mention any problems with the Alko stabiliser.
Hope this helps?

I towed my previous Bailey caravan with Al-Ko 3004 Stabiliser with no problem with the quick release towbar.
I would not worry and just enjoy now good a tow car the D3 is. Andy - 2006 HSE TDV6

The LR quick release swan nect bar is OK with ALKO stabilisers. I use it with 1300 kgs stabiliser and I think its a 2000 Kgs stabiliser. The boat and caravan drag along behind with no problems Duncan

Someone posted on the forum that in France the removable quick release tow bars were now illegal ??? Not sure if true but worth checking just in case.

Are you on about the multi hieght tow bar on a TD5, you need a different tow ball on those but not on swan neck bars DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

If you are using the quick release towbar there is no problem with using the ALKO stabilisers. The problem comes in if you use a normal 50mm bolt-on towball, as the distance from the centre of the ball to the shoulder (where the 16mm bolts go) is too short and the ALKO can foul this. It has to be a minimum of 60mm to allow the stabiliser head to rotate 25 degrees during use.

I heard this but swiftly checked with my local Mairie whilst over in France last year. He found nothing to support the claim, thankfully.

Maybe it's just on French registered vehicles?

Any problems with the ride height or level of the van. My Bailey Wyoming seems to sit nose down on my D3, whereas my TD5 always rode level.Have not changed anything in the van set up and only just had the D3.Seems to tow okay though(apart from a noisy air compressor)

with the removeable towbar the caravan or trailer will sit a bit low, but it is better for stability at speed to have the trailer slightly "nose down".

In response to the swan neck being 'banned' in France I can offer this bit of info..... A mate of mine towing some mobile toilet units (3000-3500kg) has just had an accident. Toilet unit became unhitched and hit a transit going opposite direction, breaking tranny drivers leg. THE REASON........? The swan neck snapped in half !!! I do a fair bit of heavy towing and at the moment i'm holding off the D3 until a decent tow coupling is on offer. The LR height adjustable one is not quick release and LR nor Dixon Bate have any plans to do one as far as i'm aware.
Hope this is in the right place as its my first post!! '04 Disco 2 Commercial soon to be D3 Commercial (Hopefully)

Hi Guys
I'm glad this post has popped up, I have just bought a D3 and a Coachman Laser 640/4 which is fitted with a ALKO stabiliser.
I went down to my dealer to find out which tow bar is the better one to get, the quick release or multi height?
But they couldn't really tell me very much
Is there a different noseweight limit between the two towbars?
The empty noseweight of the van is 53.3kg and the maximum hitchweight is 100kg,
would the quick release be ok with this weight?
Thanks
James

You'll be fine towing those weights. For those looking for other towbars Witter are doing one now, or go the reciever route, I think Slimer has done this. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
