Hi guys. Absolutely essential to do a megaflush max every 100,000 kms. Change all your coolant liquid, brake fluid and diff and trans box fluids every 50,000 kms and your Landy will treat you great.

Got mine done at 80k miles, still needed a new TC at 145k. Should be in the service schedule, change TC with the belts. Rolling Eyes

Just to put my mind at rest, is the TC the same in a V8 as TDV6 as in stall speed etc?

Also are the B and E clutches same?

Hi chaps as in the D2 TD5 the torque converter on the diesel is way smaller. The D3 has the same crazy problem. I believe Ashcroft transmissions in the U.K. do an amazing conversion. Regards Grunty.

A quick update from me... The gearbox of my D3 was flushed and the rev fluctuation problem has gone away. The differential was making noise and its bearings were changed. Since then my D3 is running very smooth again, no rev fluctuation or grinding noise, and I also have the impression that its fuel consumption improved around 10%. That's all Smile

Hi All

It took me a while to get the D3 into Bristol transmissions! But they sorted the problem, it was the torque converter. They said they do a LOT of these with the same issue.
Car drives like new now! Very happy with the work Bristol transmissions have done!
Very Happy

Thanks again for all the advice!

What was the cost to repair ?

Really useful stuff thanks all. I came here looking for answers as I have the same issue. Slight rumbling noise, and revs bouncing up and down. About a year ago I had the mega flush, which helped a bit but is it getting worse again.

So from what I read here, it would seem it is the Torque Converter... please let me know if there are any other posisble causes, but from what i read here, it seems to be what everyone is saying.

Skendall- did you get this sorted by replacing the torque converter? I have just bought a cheap D3 with the same issue so keen to hear whether it solved it.

Thanks!

R.

Update on fix

I had the torque converter changed (around £1300) but due to 150k miles it was recommended I overhaul the gear box too (I.e a reconditioned box put in) so went for that too (total cost over £3000).

All the shuddering and rev bouncing has gone, but I still get a rubbing noise sometimes at low revs , but now without the revs bouncing. Still investigating it. I had the drive shaft replaced too so know that is not it, so will be looking at bearings I think next.

The best thing is my MPG has gone from 24mpg to 29mpg, so glad I splashed out, although it’ll take A while to pay back the 3+ k£!

Good to hear that the main problem is resolved, albeit £3k is a pretty sizeable investment. I’ve bought the D3 for £4K in auction and it’s a great HSE spec and otherwise seems to work great, so I’ll think I will take the plunge and do it.

I want the car to serve me five years and 100,000 miles so it’s a worthy investment. I’ll flog the Freelander to pay for it if I have too.

Did you go to the main dealer or somewhere specialist?

Thanks again.

I used Bristol Transmissions. Very pleased with them, they did an extensive test drive with me to confirm the symptoms. So far so good.
