Crankshaft and bearing failures in South Africa |
|
Ok so I caught the D3 bug and upgraded both my Disco 2's to Disco 3's this week in South Africa. Coming from the UK and being a swallow - ie stay in the sun, I sought advice from this forum before buying.
So the advice was watch out for the oil pump.. so I took this into consideration and had a clear upgrade path to remove the risk by changing the pump at timing belt service time. Made sure both had FSH..
After reviewing the 4x4 forum in South Africa reveals significant bearing failures on the crankshaft and crankshafts literally snapping, but ironically very few oil pump failures.
It is becoming a regular post on the 4x4 forum as can be seen today...

So there are all sorts of theories, are we seeing the same extent of problems going unoticed in the UK or is it purely a South African issue..
Anyone like to shed some light ... any preventative maintainence ie change the shell bearing at 100k.
Thoughts welcomed from he who had bullet proof (remapped) agricultural TD5 Landrover technology to having to deal with lightweight PSA car derived technology in a 2.5 tonne truck.

Can't help but feel your high sulphur diesel does you guys no favours, also correct oil spec' is vital, however I guess you know this already. Are you careful with your oil filter replacement, incorrect fitting is fatal.

is it possible to incorrectly fit the filter if the filter clips into the engine and plastic housing is screwed on?
