I don't think you are wrong. IIRC there is a relationship in the injector value to the power generated on the firing stroke of the previous cylinder in the firing order, so if the previous cylinder has a problem, the next cylinder has to compensate to keep the revs steady.

Maybe utter ballcocks, but I'm sticking with it until someone comes up with a better idea Thumbs Up

I've just noticed that the firing order is the same as the injector number Embarassed

United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Tonga GreenDiscovery 3

Been having starting issues, cranking for about 5 seconds before firing up. Had the same issue a few months back which was cured by couple of injectors being replaced, even though is seems to have been temporary.

Armed with my shinny new IIDTool I thought I would check the injector offset to see if there was an issue there.

Being a geek, and because the cylinder to injector mapping is a bit hard to follow, I used the info in the previous posts to create the following:

Based on the info, and the assumption that the next cylinder compensates for a bad one injector, I think I will start with injector 6 then move onto injector 2. However as most of you guys know your way round the IIDTool and discos better than myself I would value your opinion.

Thanks Mickey.

So it's the high ones I need to worry about and not the low ones. My mate has a lowish mileage blown engine so might borrow the injectors from that to see if it makes a difference.

Do you think the readings shown for the injectors would cause the slow starting or should I be looking somewhere else?

PS. is there a reason only the link is in the post for the picture and the picture itself has not loaded.

I watched a good video the other day on a mechanic who tested balances on scan tool, did a leak off test and sent the same injectors off to be bench tested.

The scan tool balances and return leak test were pretty useless for troubleshooting purposes.

A bench tested confirmed injector 1 and 4 were enough to start to cause damage to pistons. If you looked at balances it showed 4 and 6 were bad. Leak off test suggested 5 and 6 were definitely bad.

Going by the LR TSB for the bad cold start issue LR would have replaced 5 and 6 but it wouldn't have helped at all and the person would still have been at risk of damaging the pistons and only symptom was a rough cold start.

If one has gone id replace all of them especially if they have done 200,000km+ just for insurance being a common rail and the fact other common rail engines (Hilux) they recommend replacing them every 160,000km to avoid issues.

Following on from my progressively poor starting issues it would appear that I now have a significant injector issue.

Using Robbie's helpful cylinder mapping pic, my IID figures would appear to indicate that the left bank (cyls 4, 5 & 6) are all reading high and will require some significant investigation.

Mileage 109600
Engine RPM 765 (and steady)
Fuel Pressure 24940 kpa

Cylinder 1, Injector 1 693
Cylinder 2, Injector 3 893
Cylinder 3, Injector 5 792

Cylinder 4, Injector 2 1188
Cylinder 5, Injector 4 1063
Cylinder 6, Injector 6 1259

Hope to do a leak off test in the coming days but suspect the wallet is about to take a hit (don't tell swmbo or she'll be wanting to push it down to the knackers yard - again Whistle )

I played the injector chase game and came up second best 5&6 were high like 1300 and 1400. Replaced both and now 1, 3 and 4 are high and 5&6 are very low like 600 & 700. I regret only doing two.

Leak tests are inconclusive and a bench test here by one of the two biggest diesel injector places here costs almost as much as replacing ($150 to test each one not inc removal or reinstallation which was like $110 per injector) so its a no brainer for me im just getting rest put in for insurance.

My petrol 2001 fuel injected ford had injector issues around the same mileage so to me at least 200,000km or there abouts is more then enough for a set of extremely hard working commonrail injectors.
