Fitting a new oil pump seal
Over the last few days used Flack's, superb "How To" guide to change my Disco 3 oil pump
Having carefully done this and the cam and hpfp belts etc over the last few days I now have a problem
She fired up all OK but the front seal is now leaking
No doubt various members have replaced the oil pump and seal without a problem
Not having the correct tool (LR 303-1122) I tried to be careful but must have up the new seal
I was very careful with the new seal that I fitted. Put some oil on it and slipped it on carefully.
It was very tight and I kind of eased it on like a tyre. No doubt I have distorted it
Two questions:
1. How exactly should the correct tool work. Looks like it eases the seal open a little?
2. Secondly has anyone come up with a sensible workaround to get the seal fitted safely?Cheers, Dave in Essex

When you get the new seal with the plastic fitting ring shove the seal on from the back so that you can see that the seal is on the plastic ring without any curls in the lip, just shove it enough so that its just on the edge of the plastic, so that you don't have to slide it on to the crank so far from the plastic ring.
Then use a big deep socket of a piece of tubing to knock the seal full home, you can't knock it to far as the new oil pump casings have a tab that the seal butts up to.
You can use oil on the seal if you want ( although LR recommend not to ) but I never do with my LR tool.

It's a PTFE lip on the seal and should be installed dry, the manufacturers installation guide warns against lubricating the seal as this will cause it to fail. I ordered the seal from AF and it came pre installed on the installation cone.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

It's alive!
Yes I did fit the new seal dry. Made sure by using brake cleaner
Tapped it home using a big impact socket. Slipped in easy
New seal fitted to my nice new oil pump
Learned a few things doing this job:
The new seal has a PTFE inner lip that seals around the crankshaft. Mess with it and you it up
There's guys on this forum that know much more than me
You can strip down and rebuild cam belts, tensioners, water pipes, starters and all the gubbins in few hours if you do it more than once 8)
Thanks to all that gave me advice, especially, Flack, Allan_T and Steve from Advance Factors Cheers, Dave in Essex

Well done indeed!
(As for me, I'd get Geoff or Flack in, as experienced hands really do matter!)
Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
I had problems with a couple of seal's in the early days until I got the LR tool for inserting it, now its a doddle to fit them and well worth the expense.
