we on here might want to be or think we are...
Dealers / service providers arent...
I discovered this many moons ago..& have been very vigilant since then..
I always take my own oil & insist that this is used...I won't & & dont compromise on the make & type of oil. Currently its the Castrol type as LR / Jab specify.
Have a look at the back of the place you use & you will see 215 litre drums..some full - some empty of the oil they use...you may be shocked to see Comma, Batoyle, Rock, Fuchs & all sorts of bargain basement stuff that you wouldn't even see in a reasonable garage forecourt.
To them its a commodity, something they have to buy & palm off on the less discriminating - if they buy cheap they can sell dear....they dont go out & pay the highstreet price of Mobil, Castrol etc.
One local to me "Indie" made the point...that "because I provided my own oil they couldn't warrant the service"...one reason + a couple more I won't be returning (if you PM me I will phone you & tell you which one)....yet the oil they would elect to use is as stated above....bargain basement stuff.
So if you go & ask which oil are you going to use - ask to see the spec sheet you will be amazed...the bargain basement stuff is an equivalent of an equivalent....you pays your money (a lot) & the garage dont pay that much...its a business transaction...they are there to profit...& they do.
Specifically they dont have the lasting involvement with the vehicle...you do....you pay to keep it good & lose when it isn't so good.
Just make sure when they tot the bill up they take off the full amount for the lubricant they haven't used at the amount they would have charges you (like the Indie - mentioned above) tried to fool me with.
OK they do still charge you for disposal - which is a joke as they sell the stuff they salvage & sell it on to a variety of outlets that re-process it..frighteningly these are in some cases the same names as I have mentioned above.
The word I have thought about using is be scrupulous....i.e. to take care all the way through the life of your pride & joy....sadly many service providers are un-scrupulous they dont give a flying ***k what happens.BREXIT - done properly.

That's all a bit worrying. How do you even know they used your oil ?
In all but very recent events (say the lat two years) I have always gone to a a place I can trust....
By trust it infers a risk that they haven't....its just not possible I could actually wait, stand & watch...
With my XK I know the two dealers I have used - have lead mechanics who "are passionate about their charges" & "love" the product...taking the time to come & talk to the owner & hand them the keys.
The XK engine doesnt tolerate anything except the Castrol Professional stuff - which isn't in Halfords or that many garages.
Take the oil you want to them....leave the oil on the passenger seat & make them aware of your request.
If you are not prepared to risk this you have to swap the oil yourself - which I did for 20 years on my string of Volvo's using Duckham's products (sadly nor more to be had subsumed into BP as Castrol has been...the technology lives on though)BREXIT - done properly.

Hi Pete, the oil you need is Castrol Edge Professional C1 5W-30, my dealer sold me 1litre for top up at £12.00 plus a freeby Land Rover oil proof bag to put it in so no nasty drips. Good price considering ASDA were selling ordinary edge for £12.00/litre. This oil seems impossible to get other than from a dealer. There are other equivalents but it must be C1 spec to keep DPF clean.
Cheers Lukey.

Thanks for the replies guys. The dealer used Mobil Super C1, but put the name down as X1 on the invoice, hence why I was worried!
However, I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells the C1 And when I've just paid £72+VAT for the oil on service I'm not too impressed!

Hi
Been lurking a while
Partly due to wanting to get a D3/D4 to replace my Pathfinder and also due to my XJ having same engine and box as a D4 so reckon I can get some hints and tips
I just read he mention of Mobil Super then mention of X1
That oil is not C1
It is an A5/B5, and is the older Ford spec not 934
Only know this as I have used it in several vehicles
Luckily it won't cause DPF problems as the Saps are low enough to be a C rated oil, just not low enough to be rated as a C1
I have used Shell C1 oil
Mobil don't do any C1 oils yet
But you can use the Citreon spec oil which is C2/C3 5w30
I have used Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 C3 for the last 6k in my XJ and it has made no difference to the economy or engine performance.
Having higher HTHS than fuel economy oils was my reason for using it and the fact the car now has more than a 100k on it.
Oh and the price of £72 is rather low for the proper oil to have been used
Even trade you will struggle to find a C1 rated oil for much under £45 for 5 litres factor in £5/10 for a filter depending on quality and I think you will come to the same conclusion as I have
Your garage has put Mobil Super 3000 5w30 X1 FE oil in your engine which can be bought for around £25 for 5 litres
Mobil Super is also the 2nd tier oil from Mobil and I would not run it much more than 6/7k I left it in my Pathfinder for 8k and for the last 500 miles the engine got noticeably louder and harsher, which never happened when using the same oil in previous Ford and Volvo diesels

It is interesting how in different markets oil companies have slightly differing product line.
Have gone through the Mobil UK site again and they have several C4,C3 and C2 oils listed.
But nowhere have they listed a C1 oil.
My preferred oil is Mobil and has been for many years.
I will have a read of Mobil site for the country where that forum originates later today.
Seems silly to have two similarly named oils where one does and one doesn't meet C1.
Or perhaps in that list there is a mistake as it mentions Mobil Super 3000 C1.
Is that a typing error and it means Mobil Super 3000 X1 FE 5w30?
Some info that may be helpful for those with a dpf.
When i have the Castrol C1 as used by Jaguar i regularly have the orange DPF light coming on requesting a run down the motorway or dual carraigeway.
When i have used Shell C1 for my intermediate oil change (8k of 16k oci) i had no such issues.
After the next service Castrol C1 was put back in by the dealer and again, DPF orange light requesting a regen run was again common, sometimes as often as twice a week.
I have had the Mobil 1 ESP C2/C3 in the sump for 4k now and not had the orange DPF light on yet.
If it hadn't happened twice i would have thought i was imagining it.
I had also considered using Comma, Morris, Fuchs or Millers oil.
But suspect i will continue with Shell or Mobil.
The warranty is up in December and i want one more year of work out the car.

Eurocarparts sell the Shell C1 oil for £43 for 5 litres.

That is where i normally get it.
Unfortunately prices in EuroCarParts go up and down all the time.
I have bought it when they had an offer code for under £35 for 5litres.
Using Mobil 1 ESP C3 was an experiment to see what difference using non fuel economy oil would make to fuel economy or performance, which was none that i can discern.
And also Halfords had a special offer on it!
I also bought an oil suction device from Euro which is not as good as the one i used to have.
But using the oil extraction pipe you do actually get all the oil out which is handy as the oil filter is right in front of you.
An open invitation for an intermediate oil change if you ask me!
I am not sure why Jaguar spec fuel economy oil, reduced HTHS, and Citroen don't for the same engine.
Is it due to trying to improve the data for the EU?
My basic knowledge of oils is that higher HTHS provides better protection?
Though that is going by internet research and reading some articles i have found online and also by reading the Bitog forum, Bob is the Oil Guy.
I can definately say i felt the Shell oil from Euro was a quality product, my car used no oil when using it, same with the Mobil 1. Though i did have to top up with the Jaguar dealer oil, i am certain it is Castrol Professional.

Why would Mobil have an oil that is not listed on their website and is not indicated when you use their oil finder?
I would expect that oil to be cheaper than Shell or Castrol.
