| How effective is the A/C in hot climates. |
|
Planning to test drive an LR3 imminently, but I'm curious about real world experiences with the A/C, especially with all that glass. This week the daily afternoon highs here in north Texas are at just about 100 degrees F.
Any accounts appreciated.
My current drives are a Chevy Tahoe Z71 and BWM X5 , both of which have excellent a/c.

Don't think the a/c is good as some others, but it does work well once under way. A lot of vehicle to chill. There is a little vent, which is hard to find, between the drivers knees, that cools down things in a funny area. My partner hates it when she has a skirt on. I drove in about 35C (95f) and found it was OK, but nothing to shout about.
What you will find is that the engine revs go up in hot climates to compensate for cooling the engine. It is all very clever, but takes a bit of getting used to, don't think it is a malfunction.

It has worked very well so far in OH, we had some mid 80's very humid temps recently, and the AC cooled things down just fine. We don't have rear air, either. The tint is very dark on the LR3 compared to my prior Rovers.
One annoyance, though, on my vehicle: the AC often won't come on right after firing up the truck and driving off. It will come on sometimes within the first minute, sometimes 2-3 blocks later, and a few times it took 5-6 minutes of driving for it to kick on. By then you're sweating like a... well... 
My dealer said this isn't normal, though they're not sure how to sort it. '05 LR3 HSE

Likewise, it is not good in high temps. Mine actually heats the car first before it starts to cool, which is rediculous.

I don't think it's actually heating, per se, the compressor is just off.
Maybe mine isn't such an anomaly, then 
I think the AC is pretty good, though, on the whole: certainly LOADS better than our old Freelander, better than our old D2, and close to as good as my old Lexus IS300. Probably not quite as good as our VW, though, that thing is like an icebox. Of course, it's 1/4 the size '05 LR3 HSE

My old VW had fantastic a/c, could freeze the pants of a monkey. My LR3 does actually heat before cool, needs the dealer I think.

Amazing, huh? Those little VWs are REALLY great in the hot summer sun. My wife has it well--drop the top on nice days, or if it's really blistering just turn on the aircon 
Mine *could* be heating, too... All I know is it's DAMN HOT at first. I assumed it was just the damn hot air from the outside but ya never know. If your dealer sorts it please post so I can point mine in the right direction. '05 LR3 HSE

Well... spent the day in Chester and went to Shirk Castle on the way back home. Temp reached nearly 28 - 30 degrees c according to the car...
AC was fine. Well cold and had to turn the fans down so we didn't freeze.

I drove mine around yesterday in town, it was 30 degrees on the temp. I did not notice any issues with the aircon, it seemed to cool the vehicle remarkably well for such a large volume of car. I am not aware of a delay for the ac to kick in.
The best aircon I have ever driven was the Mini.

I have the rear AC kit with the rear seats and it works just fine. I did tint the front driver and passenger windows which helped a lot too.I had an X5 that spent more time in the shop than my garage for AC repairs. The AC setup in the LR3 works great - way better than the one in the X5. 01 DII, 05LR3/D3

If the a/c is good enough for Houston, than it'll be fine here in D/FW. Sorry to hear that your X5 was shop prone, mine has been great other than faulty LED's on the dash info display(replaced during service visit) and have had 23,000 otherwise trouble free miles averaging 22mpg (it's a 3.0)

22mpg is very good. I didn't know the sixes got such "good" mileage.
My LR3 is shaping up to be quite good, though, I can't complain. I easily get 18-20 on the highway. Not bad for a near 3-ton truck.
As for the AC: I do believe mine is heating before it starts cooling BN. Yesterday evening I took it out (about 84 degrees F here) and it heated the cabin for 3 minutes until the AC finally kicked on. I'll have to ask the shop to sort that next time it's in. '05 LR3 HSE

Agreed! It does seem quite potent. It will be 93 degrees F here today, the best test yet, so I'm interested to see how it does. We're heading to North and South Carolina on holiday in about a month (VERY hot and humid in SC in August) so I'm hoping it will cope well as the inlaws are riding along!!
One thing that I've found annoynig: the AC smells pretty nasty when you shut it off, as the condensation evaporates out of the HVAC system. I learned from our FL and Disco that if you *didn't* shut off the AC before shutting the car off that it would end up smelling like old socks. Well the Disco3 does every time I turn it off... I'll have to be very mindful to let it dry out or I'll end up with a Disco that smells like a gym. '05 LR3 HSE
