I didn't realise the fans would run only above 15...don't think its ever been hot enough to use that feature

No it isn't as 15 deg C really is the magic number.

Note: The timed climate system will not operate if the low fuel warning indicator is illuminated or the vehicle battery has a low charge.

Im sure I got 5 degrees from somewhere and although your right (I just checked Topix) there are a few posts on here that also say 5 degrees is when the heating kicks in...never mindMike

5 degrees is for the FBH to kick in automatically .. Nothing to do with timed climateG4 Gone ...but not forgotten

But only on a D3, the D4 temp is higher; 9 deg C from (my failing) memory.

Ignition on to speed up warming as the engine is allegedly too efficient to heat up properly etcMike

I do a lot of very short journeys during the week (3 miles each way to the train station). Will park heating kill my battery if I turn it on? Should I attach a charger each evening?

In short - yes! My journeys are even shorter than yours, so I've got a CTEK MXS10 and their battery condition indicator hooked up to my AGM battery. If the light goes orange after the vehicle has shut down, then I connect the CTEK overnight.
