Osram Nightbreakers Lifespan |
|
Got my set of Nightbreakers back on the 3rd of November and I have just replaced the second once after another failure. As this was my first set I'm not too sure if that's expected lifespan on a Disco 4
What's everyone's experience with enhanced bulbs do they generally have a shorter lifespan?

Uprated bulbs do have a shorter life than standard bulbs, as they burn at a hotter temperature (hence the extra light)
But I would have expected more than 2 months from them.... My D3 Build Thread

Guess that makes sense. I was thinking 2 months was pretty short.

I have gone through 3 of them in one 1200 mile tip stay away
since getting Xeon lamps not even single bulb change in last 3 years worth getting Xeons which are cheap (relatively for D3)

buy them through advanced factors and they have a 2 year warranty, one of mine went and it was replaced within a day a phoning. very good service from all down there.
I think Steve said it was an Osram warranty so check on the pack or find a web page Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Mine only lasted about 4 months as well
TBH save up and buy a second hand set of xenon headlights. They are loads better than you will ever get with 'upgraded' bulbs.

Dave I bought them through Advanced so ill give them a shout and see what they say.
As for Xenon's not sure there worth the price. Never had them in any of my cars, need to have a go in my friends 15MY and see what they are like.
It seems to me that most of the aftermarket bulbs you get are constructed with filaments that are at the lower end of the build tolerance scale to keep costs down that would fit in with what DM said about them running hotter to get more brightness. Still im glad i know where to look when i was in Halfrauds getting a new pair of fairly Std Bosch replacements the cost of some of the extreme brightness bulbs et all are approaching £30 per bulb beginnig to think that buying cheap and in bulk may be they way to go

Worth also ensuring that you don't touch the bulb when handling and fitting. Oils from your hands can transfer to the glass and shorten their lifespan.

Many years ago I tried many many of the uprated bulbs and basically came to the conclusion that they were not worth the hassle of regular replacement.
Weirdly std 55/60 halogen bulbs have been in my shake rattle and roll 90 for 4 yrs with no issues and the same in my 1959 series 2 but for 5 years.
But as the wiring is so crap in such old cars its doubtful the the bulbs actually see the full 12 volts!
