what do I need to strip and clean handbrake shoes?

I have an intermittent squeel that is handbrake related and I need to give it the necessary treatment! I've seen spring kits etc but what exactly do I need is one spring kit enough to do everything or do I need more? Anything else?

I just jacked mine up wheel off and adjusted the shoes no noises since, took 15 clicks to lock them up.

You wont know if you need new springs, clips or pins until you get the disk off.

Most of the time, it is just some copper grease and set-up, but the pins that hold the shoes to the backplate are known to corrode, usually ending up with the shoes being trashed if left too long.

Mine were in a horrific state when I changed my discs, so I just replaced the lot. I had no hope of being able to adjust them before as the knurled adjusters were well and truly stuck (after a soak in some WD40 and a good copper grease they're as good as new) and one of the hex things completely rounded off. Half the pad material just fell off when I took the disc off one side.

Thumbs Up
