D4 Dipped headlight bulb gone |
|
Noticed last night when the wife came home that there was a dipped headlight bulb out. I asked if she had seen a warning message come up but she said no. I thought that's strange, I've had a lot older cars that have showed messages, but sure enough I got in and started up and no message, is this right? Surely it should warning or light check?

Don't have a light warning on the D4, good time to get some Osama night breakers from advanced factors though. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Do you upgrade the bulbs in the dipped beam or both? (it looks like there is a bulb for both dipped and main beam when looking into the headlight that's all?)

Its always amazed me that the D4 doesn't alert the driver when a headlight bulb is out. I think they simply forgot to add the message when they designed it.
To be clear your D4 does know when a headlight bulb is out, it has a very sophisticated bulb monitoring system for the headlights, (the lights don't even have to be turned on for it to know that a bulb is broken). Unfortunately all it does when it realises that a bulb is out is log a fault code that you can then only read with a fault code reader.
I really do think that a programmer somewhere simply forgot to put in the logic that says if fault code X is present display bulb failed on the instrument cluster

And if you really want to know the details of how it monitors the headlight bulbs here it is from the documentation:
Bulb Monitoring
Bulb failure monitoring is performed by the CJB processor. The lamps are cold and warm monitored by the MOSFETs in order to detect bulb failure.
• NOTE: Relay controlled lamps have no diagnostic monitoring.
The CJB processor provides outputs to each MOSFET. The output switches the MOSFET to supply the required output to power the applicable lighting circuit. The microprocessor evaluates the circuits by detecting the returned signals from the controlling MOSFET.
When the bulb or LED is functioning normally, the output signal voltage from the controlling MOSFET is 0V. If a bulb or LED in the circuit fails, an open circuit occurs and the MOSFET outputs a signal of 5V to the processor. The signal is interpreted as a bulb or LED failure and generates a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) which can be retrieved using an approved Land Rover diagnostic system.
Warm monitoring is performed continuously when the lights are switched on by evaluating the diagnostic output of the MOSFET switches. Cold monitoring is performed at 32 second intervals when the lights are switched off. The MOSFETs briefly switch on the lights for approximately 1 millisecond (this is insufficient to illuminate the bulb or LED) and checks the bulb or LED as per warm monitoring.
Cold monitoring is not possible for the low/high beam headlamps of vehicles using xenon bulbs. On these vehicles the cold monitoring of the low/high beam headlamps is switched off in the CJB. The CJB detects a failed xenon bulb via a reduction in current flow to the affected headlamp's xenon control module.
When a xenon bulb fails, the control module's current consumption falls to 60mA, which the CJB detects as unsuccessful bulb illumination.

I've had 4 Dipped Beam bulbs blow in less than a year on my D4 - I tried the NightBreakers - which were nice and bright while they lasted (less than 3 months).
Thought it would be a bit expensive to keep buying pairs of 'upgrade' bulbs - so went to Halfords thinking I'd stock up on 'cheap' ones, to keep in the car - and found these 'long life' versions - so far so good, but time will tell. Seem reasonably bright too.

Got the replacement process down to a fine art now though ... I even managed to change one recently in the car park at the Drive Thru Costa, before my flat white got cold ... D3 S 2006 - 2013

I have the same problem on mine - multiple bulb failure over an unusually short period of time. Never got to the bottom of it and like you got fed up of paying for expensive high power bulbs.
How long have these long life ones been in ?
Anyone got any idea what the actual problem is? (Someone on here previously suggested that car might be configured for exons - but I got the dealer to check and mine was supposedly set up correctly)
