Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like a split intercooler hose, so have a good look and prod around the big air tubes. Cheap and easy to fix DIY.

As you open the bonnet on the left hand side there is a large black hose, (intercooler hose) as Robbie and Flack say theres a good chance it has a split, give it a good 'squeeze' if it has a split changing is easy, see here

I can vouch for that. I did mine last weekend in about half an hour.

Is that not normal with any diesel engine to have a short blast of black smoke on hard accelaration, especially if it's been running at low revs and at a very moderate pace for a time. I'm usually a 60mph person and every now and then give it some wellie through the gears, as i can do with a mannual box to clear any carbon deposits etc.

If there's a split in the hose it will look like it is burning coal under acceleration.
If it's just a cloud then it could be normal if this has happened all of a sudden then it could be the above.

Just jumping in on this thread, as I have the same issue!! If you can "squeeze" the intercooler hose does this mean there is a split?
I have the same issues, and it does resemble coal smoke! Seems to only be above 2500 rpm. The car is very nippy apart from this.2006 RRS HSE - Tonga Green

No you have to look for a split when you squeeze the hose
I changed mine to a silicon one before the original split

I have a my54 d3 he's diesel auto. I have no smoke when I accelerate but then I do boot it quite a lot. I to had the split intercooler hose but I didn't get any smoke just a strange whistle noise from the engine bay. The split was about 3 inches long on the underside of the top bend.
Hope this helps

Please forgive me, I am a complete novice in everything!!!
I can locate the top of the intercooler pipe (duh!) but its the bottom of it that I am struggling with. On the "How to" it said about removing 3 clips on one of the lower panels. Looking at the engine bay I would presume that these are the ones that on the RRS I have access to from the wheel side?
I have release one of the clips, but on establishing that they are pretty once removed, I thought it may be best to ensure that I am removing the correct section, and what the item code is for replacement clips!
Does removing this give access to the lower connection of the intercooler pipe?
Is it also worth raining the suspension to work in this space, tbh im a bit paranoid of the suspension lowering itself whilst im working away!! lol....
Direction always greatly appreciated!
** And is the Discovery 3 & 4 TDV6 Intercooler pipe the same size as the RRS TDV6? Cheers! **2006 RRS HSE - Tonga Green

Yes, removing that panel will reveal the lower connection of the inter cooler hose. The knack to removing the 4 ? (from memory ) fasteners is to lever the central rivet part of it out a few mm,with a small flat screwdriver or similar, then the whole fastener will pull out, usually without damage, and can be re used. Sorry I don't know the p/no of those, nor the correct hose for your vehicle, but I 'm sure Steve at Advanced Factors, or other sponsors would sort you out with those. Lift up if necessary, but it would be wise to put an axle stand under the chassis rail in case it decides to lower.
