So which new car should I look at
I have had my D3 SE for 7 years now.
It's been good, new belts and a new alternator and the ERG's done having been basically the only work done on it.
It's only got 70k on the clock so it has a huge amount of life left, yet I find myself getting restless.
What I am after is improving fuel economy, I am only getting 23 mpg urban and with a new job that has a daily cross town distance of 25 miles each way.
I normally buy a vehicle that's had a previous owner for a year or thereabouts so I won't be in the market for the Disco Sport just yet (if at all). and I do fancy an HSE.
I suppose my questions are, is an Early D4 or an HSE worth buying over what I already have and if so are there any choices which will improve upon the fuel economy I am already getting or will I be looking at having to buy a RRS or one of the evoke's .
Any idea's/opinions please?regards

Thanks for your well intentioned response Robbie.
I have already done/am doing your recommendations from when you told me about improving MPG back when I did my EGR's. My car gets 23 as stated.
My question was about have the engines improved on fuel economy since my 2005 tdv6 lump and if so which one.
Anyone have any clues please?

The best I can get around town is 25, or maybe 27 in really light flowing traffic,however we bought it to tour (which it does superbly)and not cruise the suburbs. When we're done travelling we'll get a hybrid Horses for courses

Why not keep your current D3 and then the money you save by not upgrading will more than cover any extra mpg that you may get with a newer car / engine, plus you know your car.
You could also look at improving yours with a d4 upgrade.Now - 2008 Freelander 2 HSE

If fueleconomy improvment is what you most desire then that rules out all Landrover models. Non do more than 28 mpg on average. I know there are some exceptions.
That leaves you looking for estate cars Passat, Merc, Skoda Superb( huge boot plus 45mpg)
Even lesser 4x4 are thirsty beasts but probably the best are the outlander and CRV.
On the bright side fuel prices are lower now than for years and looking to stay that way a while.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

The whole point was I'm getting reckless. 28 mpg would be a fine improvement and I wouldn't be interested in any of the vehicles suggested.
Putting in a d4 lump is interesting but that would involve upgrading the rest of the drive train as well and the cost would probably be around the same as buying a newer land rover.

Only my humble opinion of how I see the situation but....
You want to change cars.
You want to stick with the LR brand.
You like the size / layout / practicality of the D3 but want something newer.
The economy is a small issue really but you'd like to know if in making your choice there is one which is better than the rest.
If you can't be convinced to look at a 4.4 tdv8 FFRR then go buy an SDV6 HSE D4 and thoroughly enjoy the next 5 or 6 years of motoring and forget all about the economy

The change to another LR will not be based upon any fuel economy benefit as, let's be honest, they're not much better even now and by the time you factor in the depreciation curve of a newer car versus your it'll cancel out (in fact changing to a newer car you may even be worse off financially!!)
Either buy a D4 because you want to, or buy a blue efficiency mercedes estate.

my MY12 D4 with 8 speed will get up to a genuine 28 but you do need to be careful. The worst I have had is 24 on a couple of occasions but that probably involved a bit of off road.
It is averaging 26.62 actual over its life so far which would be an improvement for you but dont expect 28, especially across town. The 8 speed I believe is a little better on fuel than the 6 speed.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

If a Disco' Sport is big enough and/or on a 'potential' list then they can, genuinely, do decent MPG's. This is 2.2d with 9 speed auto 'box
Best is typical sub 70mph long drive with lots of cruise control. Last three journeys was two 17 mile commutes with 2 mile queue of crawling traffic and one 2 mile cross-town journey. My overall 'average' in all conditions is about 38-39 mpg

On another forum I'm on, a guy had one of the first Evoques, bought for his wife.
She got a true 36 mpg average and it never had a single issue.
Recently replaced it a few weeks ago with a new Evoque, which so far is doing 43mpg. Again driven by the wife.
Both cars have been manuals. If you don't need the D3 size then an Evoque could be your answer.
Still keeps you in the LR brand, still has lots of toys like your SE has but should deliver the extra mpg you want.
