Electrical fire!!!!!

Left home today and about half a mile down the road the ignition warning light came on ( red battery). I thought better about pressing on so returned home. On parking up there was a strong burning smell so gingerly lifting the bonnet smoke was coming from the left side of the engine block (looking from the front). A quick disconnect of the battery seems to have stopped it.
Ideas?

Your alternator has let go, stink don't they. Rolling Eyes

Quite often they cause a dead short and kill your battery too but your prompt action may have saved your battery and the thick end of £100.
Leave the battery disconnected until you've sorted the alternator as it will fry it if you reconnect it.
You'll have to go with a driveway replacement from either yourself or one of the mobile forum mechanics, Flack, Geoff etc. as to drive to your local repairer without stopping the dead short, will kill the battery stone dead. Big Cry

Good luck.

Yep, sounds like the alternator to me too.

I'm quite near you by the look of it, so if you're going to swap it out yourself give me a shout and you can borrow the spanner I made to hold the fan when I changed mine.

OEM Denso alternators here, bud:

The Advanced Factors Pro Kits are great, too, since they have the tools and a new aux belt:

I have viscous fan tools, too, and am in Chandler's Ford. Thumbs Up

Advanced Factors close at 12:00 today if you are able to pick one up before they close.

Thanks for the replies, I have a fan spanner but having a bit of trouble undoing the nut! Then it got dark and started raining Sad
I think I will give it a further go next week but work beckons Monday and Tuesday.
Why the difference in price for different makes? And what makes the Denso one worth half as much again?

Bear in mind that the viscous fan nut is a left hand thread. Thumbs Up

Personally, I would not fit anything other than a Denso alternator to my D3. It's what LR fitted in Solihull when your car was built and there are far too many stories on here about cheaper alternators from Euro Car Parts overcharging resulting in EPB faults and the like.

The warranty you get from Advanced Factors is second to none.

Denso all the way. Thumbs Up

Yep thanks! Just having a bit of trouble locking the thing still whilst giving the big nut a sharp tap (clockwise).
Denso it is then.
