Is it my diff ?

Car went in a few weeks ago to have both front wheel bearings done, new A/C pipes and regas and both front lower suspension arms changed (still reeling from the bill on that service) but when I got it back it seemed to have a very very low whine between 50 and 70mph.

That slowly has increased in sound though you wouldn't probably notice it if you had the radio on so not a massive noise. Sound doesn't increase when i lift off gas.

Under 50mph no sound at all and drives fine but if you sit at 50mph (as I do on the M1 roadworks section) you can definitely hear a whine and if you go up to 70mph it increases in sound.

The last week it has also seemed a little down on power when accelerating from 50 to 70 mph. The last few days it sometimes feels to be holding gears slightly longer than normal or changing down earlier when going up a incline but that could just be my paranoia !

It's been back to the garage and they couldn't hear anything apparently.....

Any ideas what this could be ??

No the sound is still there whether the AC is on normal, Econ or switched off

I am pretty confident it is a mechanical sound/noise just no idea what it is !

Ok an update on this bl@@dy noise.....

Had the gearbox flushed about 2 months ago and lo and behold the noise disappeared and has been fine until this week when it has now returned !

It now comes in as a constant drone about 25 mph and stays there regardless of speed. No real change in volume if you back off the throttle or accelerate hard...

It kind of reminds me of the noise the Stuka dive bombers made !

Anyone have any ideas ?

I am having a similar problem at the moment 108k miles sadly I think it may be the torque converter on its way, any juddering when going up a hill in low gear?

Yes I think after doing some reading up it is the torque converter on mine - I read somewhere that a gearbox flush can cure it for a few months but it comes back which is exactly what's happened with mine.

I have noticed some very slight juddering on mine when going up hill, theres a bit of motorway I use to go to work where you're restricted to 50mph for roadworks and when that lifts to 70mph its on an uphill bit and it always feels like it is struggling to get to 70mph and has a slight judder/vibration when doing it. In fact the more I think about it the more I realise that happens on all inclines !

If it is the torque Convertor I had mine replaced under warranty at Barnsley auto transmissions, they had if for roughly a week, very good service and it only cost me my £50 excess with WD otherwise £3k

Do you have any extended warranty on the vehicle, if not would suggest you look into it Whistle could save you a few pound in the long run.

Hope it helps Thumbs Up

Oh the warranty company also replaced the front diff too, another £50 Rolling Eyes

Yes I have an extended warranty with WD so will give them a call at some stage.

Does anyone know of a definitive way of proving it is the torque converter ? I want to be sure before it gets booked in for anything.

I phoned them direct after being given a number of a 4x4 specialist as they said sounds like it but phone them direct if you come through me then I will add a bit of commission on for doing it so phoned them booked it in they took it for a drive said yep TC on its way out then the wait for WD to authorise it, couple of days and it's like a new gear box. Just make sure all your docs are in order.

Radar, as I said above you have exactly the same symptoms as me, my local LR dealer says is isn't the torque converter (but from reading on here I believe it is) but can't establish what it is so suggests I leave it until it develops!

Over here I have been quoted Euro 1,600 for a new torque converter and gear box overhaul, my problem is that it is they are the only local gearbox spcilaist around here and I am not sure how good they are.

First impressions is that the workshop was very clean and tidy and full of Audi's and Porsches have their great boxes rebuilt (no not just Land Rovers!)

Looking online at the various symptoms of a dying torque converter I am pretty convinced that is what it is, I'm getting the drone/whine, vibration/shudder when going up hill, feels like I am driving on a rough road surface a lot of the time with bumps etc (I thought it WAS the roads lol !), engine running hot on occasion etc etc - all these went away when I had the gearbox flushed but 2 months later they're all back....

I will give the transmission specialists and WD a call tomorrow and see what they all say !

Mine has the same low speed judder in low gears going up hills. About 20-25mph and you put your foot down to gain speed.

I had my box flushed as well, made no difference.

Bill for next year to get either a new one in or the current one overhauled. Crying or Very sad

Seems to be a relativly common fault on here when they get to around 110k miles, although the workshop manager at my local LR dealer says has never known any to fail!

130k on mine.

It's done it for a while but it's only a few hills that trigger it.
My mates D3 is awful in comparison, his judders really badly on most hills now. Sad
