Replacing Rear Camshaft Oil Seals |
|
I think I've traced a minor oil leak to the NSR (HPFP side) camshaft oil seal.
The turbo heat shield is covered in a black engine oil film and is dripping onto the cast turbo body. From there, it's being heated by the turbo and dispersing itself all over the chassis and front diff, keeping the rust at bay.
When Flack replaced my belts earlier this year, we noticed that there was oil on the inside of the HPFP cover, but thought no more of it. The leak seems to be getting progressively worse even though I've covered in excess of 10,000 miles since Flack changed my belts. It's not dripping on the drive or anything like that but is coating the bottom end of the engine bay with a thin film of oil.
My indy wasn't keen on doing the job because he doesn't have the specialist tools to do the job in-situ and the body would have to come off if I took it to him.
My local Land Rover main dealer have just quoted me a book time of 2.5 hours at the Land Rover Allegiance rate which doesn't sound too bad at all to me, for such an awkward job. That suggests they have the specialist tools to leave the body on.
Interestingly, he said they've had to do a few 3.0 D4s lately but doing this job on a 2.7 TDV6 is much slightly easier.
Guava seemed less keen on doing the job with the body on and were probably going to go down the body-off route as well at a cost of around £800 to replace a £3 part (obviously other jobs would be done if body was to come off).
My D3 is a 2006MY having covered only 115,000 miles.
Has anybody else done this job/had this done before, please? What would cause this oil seal to fail so soon?

I'm inclined to think the same, Mike.
The dealer I spoke to seemed fairly confident they could do it with body on as they had just done a D4 3.0 TDV6 rear camshaft oil seal on the other side. They have the special tools to do the job, they say.
