Towing

Just a small rant. Something I'm seeing more and more of nowadays. Discovery, Range Rover owners mostly, towing on the motorway using the outside lane on 3 plus lane motorways. Everybody I would have thought knew about this simple law that the max towing speed is 60 mph and you must be able to do the 70 mph to venture into the 3rd lane. Only this weekend on a long run up to Cannock we saw a private plated Discovery towing a small trailer with mountain bikes sat in it doing in excess of 80 mph in the 3rd lane completely oblivious to what was going on around him. The private plate ended 1 PLK and one of my passengers suggested it was short for ONE PILLOCK. We all agreed with him. Rant over..............

It's incredibly unfortunate but there are, in my experience, many drivers of vehicles who tow and simply aren't aware of the additional limits/requirements placed on them by such activities.

It's not limited to just Land Rover drivers however, I'd suspect as a group there'll be far more drivers of white vans with trailers on the back exceeding many more limits than just being in the wrong lane at the wrong speed.

Was trying to talk the owner of our local recovery garage but he could hardly speak as he was incandescent with rage/anger. The local plod was refusing to prosecute the driver of a vehicle towing to a two horse horsebox which had overturned on the A30 - both horses amazingly survived - but the police thought he had been punished enough by the accident.

He was towing the horse box with a PEUGEOT 205 !!!!!

The right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes MUST NOT be used (except in prescribed circumstances) if you are driving:

any vehicle drawing a trailer

But that doesn't say you have to travel at 70 mph ?

Pug 205? No problem, They used to sell Austin Metro's with packages specifically designed to pull caravans!

The UK law states that on a 3 lane motorways vehicles towing a trailer must not use the 3rd lane. Only in certain circumstances can you use the 3rd lane to pass ie slow moving traffic, vehicles under escort hauling oversize loads etc. the reason I know this is I done a CPC for road haulage and was one of the exams questions. But you do see some idiots who tow using the 3rd lane including HGV's and hogging the 3rd lane.

But just to throw a spanner into the works, that law doesn't apply to dual-carriageways, only motorways!

Before anyone asks, no I'm not one who either speeds whilst towing a trailer/caravan (or at any other time for that matter!), nor do I tow in the third lane of motorways. I'm off to collect my wings and halo now. Thumbs Up
