Discovery 4 - Battery Type

Sorry - if this has been covered before -

My battery needs replacing on my 2011 Disco 4 -

According to Guy Salmon LR dealer in Portsmouth all Disco 4 has 'energy recovery system' fitted which basically means the battery I need is twice the price of a conventional one.

Is this correct???

The model I have is a GS - it does not have stop/start technology.

Can any one confirm the above please before I buy my new battery - Thanks.

Hi bobbypee,

I went down to see one of the site sponsors Steve at Advanced Factors at Southampton to get a powerful AGM battery - just over £100 I think. No ccf changes needed although a hard reset recommended.

I would look to go down that route if the dealer quote is astronomical. Thumbs Up

Hi Nick - Thanks for the info.

You bought an AGM battery - so it is correct that all Disco 4 have this energy recovery system and need the AGM type battery?

Cheers

Hi Rob,

No, they don't need an AGM and I don't think we have any energy recovery with our early D4's but I was advised to get an AGM as they are more efficient for recharging (I think) and are used in the stop start variants in later models.

This might be useful http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic117087.html?highlight=agm

I think someone with more knowledge than me will be able to answer the recovery question more accurately. But mine has been fine.

I'm no expert but my understanding is that all D4s have a battery management strategy and a degree of 'energy recovery' - however you want to define that; my understanding is that both are much more advanced on later model years than earlier ones which is why at some point the standard battery was changed to AGM (can't recall when that happened) and I guess that AGM also became more popular/widely available as time went on.

I guess that your D4 doesn't necessarily 'need' an AGM battery (given that it probably didn't have one when it was made) but it will probably benefit massively from having an one - that is why dealers now only supply the AGM type.

For the difference in price it will give you much more peace of mind and be much less likely to be flat on a cold winters morning.

My MY2010 still has the original non AGM fitted and will be changed to an AGM before the really cold weather sets in this year because last year (which wasn't all that cold really) I had a couple of mornings where it only just started, even though I do tend to keep it topped up with a charger but I do lots of relatively short journeys so not enough recharging time.

I've just replaced the battery in my MY2011 D4... Dealer wanted more than £300 for new battery and half hour labour for diagnostics???

Anyway, the original LR branded one was AGM so I replaced it with same. Thumbs Up

Amongst other advantages an AGM battery is more tolerant of a low state of charge, which is quite often brought about by the BMS refusing to use the alternator to charge the blimmin thing up.

I know what you mean about the dealer - I was quoted £266 for the battery - then another £31 + VAT for fitting it Rolling with laughter - unsurprisingly I will source one from somewhere else! Smile

Cheers for the info.
