Front diff settings

Hi, does anyone know the backlash and preload settings for a front diff
Local mot station has damaged mine doing a brake test and he's attempted to rebuild it
I don't think it has been done correctly. When asked what he had preloaded to abd backlash I was told 19ft/lb and 6 thou backlash
Can move the front propshaft 1/8 of a turn so more than 6 tho backlash ???

Thanks

Aaron

Hi Aaron, the guy should have known better. He should get you a proper recon unit or new one.

I assume it he put it on the brake rollers?

There are no official figures for backlash and preload settings as LR only sell the diff as an entire assembly. This is the biggest problem people face when their diff becomes noisy. The only problem with a noisy diff is usually a noisy bearing, but without backlash and preload settings it is hard to put it back correctly.

If you're not happy the job has been done properly then give him chance to rectify it or he needs to get you a new diff.

If he doesn't know enough that you have to do the legwork to ensure it's been put right then I suggest getting a new one fitted, possibly elsewhere at his cost, is the only correct option.

On the vt 40 it gives specific instruction how to conduct the brake test
It should be done on the road using a decelarometer .

The brake efficiency test is conducted using a decelorometer while on a road test. IIRC the system should warn the MOT tester that the vehicle cannot be tested on a two wheel rolling road.

4x4's should be tested using a Tapley Meter / Decelerometer. Not be tested on rollers

I believe that is the standard config as in the "handbook"

There are some rollers which I understand are suitable for 4x4's but all MOT test stations must be equipped with a Tapley Meter to conduct on road brake tests of vehicles with permanent 4WD.

If you don't know the garage doing the MOT then ring up in the few days leading up to it and ensure they know that it is a permanent 4WD vehicle and ask if they have the facilities to test it off rollers.

It's mainly vehicles with viscous couplings that are at risk however I personally wouldn't want to take that chance.

I thought pinion bearing preload was normally measured in in/lbf not ft/lbf, did he replace the crush sleeve?
