Slack in the front right wheel and much
Sorry to bother you again. My car still causes me issues.
I had a noise from the front of the car. Thought I identfied as a bad wheel bearing and have now changed left and Rear at a shop. They were bad but no so bad as I thought. They called me and said that the slack is still there despite change of wheel bearings? Nothing on the left but on the right side? I had a sound of knockning over speedbumps with steering turned on low speed but had the slack before this sound but it perhaps is related? Called Steve and wondered if it was possible to swap inner tie rods ( and they are in different sizes and can swap around for LHD to RHD) but Steve Said it was not possible.
I have a LHD swedish D3 2006 HSE.
I have changed almost everything in the front as (in july 2014):
Both outer track rod ends, both inner rack ends, both steering gaiters and clips & nuts.
Wishbones upper, lower and all bushes
Antirollbar
Brakes
Wheel bearings
Antirollbar bushes
So whats left steering column, steering rack? I beginning to give up.
Any thoughts? My wallet will not survive a 600£ steering rack with all other expenses.
So please help

When you say there is slack in the wheel do you mean if it's up on a ramp you can physically move the wheel about?
If there's visible slack then the cause must be traceable.
I'm sure it's not as simple as I say as you have obviously had a lot of work done on it.

Yes, slack when car lifted. Car feels instabile when driving. It's a big slack 2-2,5 cm. It's in the shop right now and are lifted they searching the fault but it's not a LR or D3 mechanic. They should change air compressor and wheel bearing only (not so advanced). Was going to update software with my IIDTOOL and the noise and slack would be gone but that was not the case.
I really can't imagine so much that can cause the slack as everything i changed accept steering rack and column? No more money, no more ideas?
Fix one thing and get another fault. Perhaps I can laugh at it in the future.

There is absolutely no slack on the left wheel. It is like it should be but the right one is everthing else but fine.

Was both 3-9 and 6-12 but is now better with new wheel bearings. Have still a light knock in what I feel is in the steering in low speed and bigger turns. Hear it less after new bearings. It's still a slack and the mechanic will call me tomorrow for a consultation of what to do. One possibility is to takes look at the inner and outer rods and see if it's adjustable. Suppose next thing is steering rack. I think i was more 3-6 now that the slack are

Having already replaced the track rods I doubt there's that much play in them.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

Got the car back and going for a wheel alignment to see whats happening after that. Much less play after new wheel bearings. Still a sound of clunck/klick from the front in low speed and when turning and driving over speedbumps. There is no sound when driving straight over speedbumps. Also when turning and backing if the ground is not plain.
I absolutely got better after new wheel bearings.
Well it's so far i come for the moment.

I tried to analys the sound and when it's apear.
Sound is a some sort of knockning.
Happens when I turn left right, right left in corners in low speed (hard to hear in higher speed). Small speed bumps or pothole and turning causes the knockning in low speed. Straight over speedbumps gives no knockning.
I think I can feel a little play still in the stearing.
I believe I feel the knockning in the steering wheel most of the time.
Drove it a longer run to try find the problem. Wheel alignment is on monday. Everything is changed in the front wishbones, antirollbar, tie rods inner/outer.
Whats left? steering column, steering rack, suspension spring/dampner.

Have you replaced the lower steering universal joint (not sure if that is not correct term) but sure someone will correct.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

I suppose you men track Rod ends?
I have changed a complete kit from Steve at advanced factors with: Kit contains Both outer track rod ends, both inner rack ends, both steering gaiters and clips & nuts.
I had a play before i changed the wheel bearing and also a strange noise. Had problem to solve what is was. That sound is now gone.
I have new bigger tires, spacers and did all of antirollbar, wishbones. I don't think I had any knockning sound like this before: tires, spacers, but not shore. I did all changes in a short time.
Trying to determine if on or more changes were made and if it was any problem after that.
I did the complete kit for tie rods and track because of the new tires and spacers.
I Done some work on my car but not tie rods and track ends. I called Steve because of that I have a LHD vehicle so it wasnt possible to put a track Rod on wrong side but he Said it was not possible.
Next thing I'm thinking of is it possible that my mechanic didnt measure right and put the track rod at the wrong distance? A bad wheel bearing and some play and bad measurement? Can it be so simple?

Yes, i have read it. Thanks. The way I see it i can be caused by lower steering column and it's cheaper then the steering rack.
My list right now are:
1. Track ends track rod -mechanic labour
2. Steering column -100£ with shipping
3. Steering rack expensive and hard to find for LHD 600£ or more
4. Suspension spring/dampner ( almost excluded sound feels in steering and both sides) 150£/side
Steering column sound is interesting. Have anyone recorded sound of this? Would really want to hear it?
