Electrically dead

Just had a strange fault . Pulled up at the traffic lights and noticed that my aircon stopped. Looked down and the info display was blank and my Satnav was shutting down because of loss of power. It was completely dead however the hazards did work. Switched the ignition to 0 then back to first position and it all light up and started fine. No bongs no faults displayed. I'm hoping it was just a gremlin but has anybody else had this happen?

Do an alternator test those bad boys can cause all sorts of weird issues.

Thanks Narpy, by an alternator test do you mean just test it is putting 14v into the battery?

I remember that the Indy said that he put a new alternator on before I bought it because he was using it while it was for Sale and it went on him so it's only 18 months old

I had low power warning once on mine, everything stopped couldn't even listen to the radio....Did a 24hr battery charge.

I'd check the battery with engine not running, then again with engine running - there have been a few issues on the forum, you may want to search here as well

Thanks Ieuan, it didn't give me any faults or bongs. Just checked the battery and it's 12.42v then 14.38v with engine running. The sat nav said loss of voltage which it always does when you switch the ignition off. But we have been away and the car was stood for a week in a car park and then drove 300 miles with the DVD screens burning away at something daft like 3A each so I think I will take your advice and put the conditioner on anyway.

The car has been fine since then doing hundreds of miles until today. It cut out on swmbo while overtaking on a dual carriage way. She said it felt like there was no power and then the car just went dead, not even the info display or idiot lights were on. She pulled over turned the key off and back on and it lit up with suspension access height on the info screen. Started ok then. Phoned Indy but he hasnt come across this fault before.

Brake switch or bad brake bulb?

Have you had the fault codes read?

The indy is going to read the fault codes tomorrow, his first words were when was the alternator last changed although he did say he wouldnt expect you to be able to start it again if this was the case.

Thats a strange fault to occur if the brake switch was gone but it is a LR after all Laughing . I will mention it to him Robbie, thanks Thumbs Up (rear light are D4 LED)

It's not strange on a D3.

The brake circuit is 12v and is the only full voltage circuit through the ECU. When the switch starts to fail it arcs on the carbonised crud and the electrical effects transmitted to the sensitive systems in the ECU are legendary!

My Son had the same intermittent sudden loss of power on his D3 a while ago, turned out to be a loose battery earth connection where the negative lead connects to the body.

Yep, that can do it too; same with loose battery terminals.

Just an update. Indy found no fault codes stored, he was on the phone to LR for an hour going through all the other info that he pulled out but they came up with no reason for the power cutting out. So I've got her back and was told to try not to recycle the ignition if it happens again ( but from what I remember it wouldn't restart unless switched to 0). I decided for the few quid it costs that I would replace the brake switch anyway which I've done. The old one was like brand new when I took it to bits but at least it's now ruled out. Thanks to all the replies and suggestions, watch this space because it's surely going to rear it's ugly head again Evil or Very Mad
