Rumbling noise when driving

Hi All,

Just been to South France and back, the disco was lovely to drive Smile however on the way back I noticed a rumbling noise coming from the front, a bit like wheel bearing drone. I have just jacked up the car and the no play on the drivers side wheel, however the passenger front wheel there is play when I wobble the wheel at the 3 and 9 position, also the outer edge of the tyre is slightly scrubbed. I can feel play in the steering track rod. Is the likely to be the steering track rod or could it be the wheel bearing? I guess the steering track rod is the first thing to change, I hope that it is the tyre moving about that is causing the noise and that the wheel bearing is ok?
Is the best way to eliminate the steering track rod to just replace it first?

Yes, best to change both sides and buy a pair, if you only change one make sure you order the correct side as they are different.
Bearings do not always have "play" when they are worn and rumble, it may be one roller within the bearing that has a flat spot that is causing it, if you change the bearing check the revised torque setting for the new hub nut. It can when others can't,

Just changed one of my fronts due to a rumble - no discernible play when tested but a definite 'flat' spot when off and rotated by hand.

The bearings are not handed so no need to worry about that.

Part number IIRC is LR014147 - genuine Timken set me back £102 all in and took me about 4 hours from start to finish with tea, pee and bog breaks. I see no ships........

I think m3dpo was on about the track rods (not ends) being hAnded and not the wheel bearings.

Inner rod ends, the ones that connect to the power steering are definitely handed, they are even a different size thread, bearings are not, neither are outer track rod ends but outer track rod ends can differ in length from model i.e. RRS. It can when others can't,

Hi All,

As an update to this issue, I replaced both the inner track rods and the end ball joints using the kit from Advanced Factors. Not too bad a job to do in the end. Then had it fully tracked. Stopped the knocking noise I was getting over bumps etc. Noticed this after I replaced the front anti roll bar bushes a few months back.
However I was still getting the rumbling noise, but the steering is now much more precise.

I found that if I shock the steering to the left when driving the noise went away, so looks like the front drivers side wheel bearing.

Ended up taking the car to a local indie to check and change the wheel bearing, back at work now so didn't have the time to do it myself. Just got the car back and it so much quieter now!

Next job is to fit the freelancer 2 headrest monitors I have to the existing headrests. And wire up to the Raspberry pi running XBMC, think this will have to wait for a little while though.
