Front diff confusion help needed please |
|
Good evening all, thought I would try to pick your brains as I'm very confused. To start with I have pretty much read all of the diff threads on this forum and I think that's making my confusion worse, so here goes.
I have what I believe to be a front diff issue. My symptoms are- when pulling away I get a metal scraping noise from front of car, as I accelerate the noise disappears with engine and road noise but is followed by vibration that can be felt through the accelerator and steering wheel and gets worse when Turning slightly to the left or right, like on a long bend. This all stops when I lift my foot OFF the accelerator and all goes nice and quiet and vibrations go away. If I then REAPPLY the accelerator the vibrations come back. My confusion is that when I read all of the diff problems on hear they state that front diff problems are when you lift off the accelerator you hear noises and vibrations and it's deffo front end. I can now say it's not
Tyres
Alignment 4 wheel
Wheel bearings
Upper and lower Arms
Track rods and ends
Arb bushes
Prop shaft
Drive shafts
Cv joints
Aircon compressor
Water pump
Aux belt Tensioners
Diff oils
Battery
Think thats everything
As all of these I have replaced over the last 6 months.
I hope someone on here can help me or advise me.
As you can see from the work I've had done the d3 has cost me a fortune and the wife is now saying that if anything else goes wrong it's going. . So my next corse of action is microphones on the front diff but again this is more money to spend and more from the wife so you see my dilemma.
Thank you all in advance
Regards
Dave.

I have similar but not exactly the same issue. Low frequency transmission wind down noise when I lift off the throttle. Been following a thread on here and have ordered diff oil to check state of diff oil.
Might be worth changing the oil to see if any debris comes out before shelling out big money on the diff's.

Thanks for the reply Eenomc, I had the diff oils changes a couple of months ago. Didn't find anything out of the ordinary. Even let the old oil sit for a week and no shiny bits and felt smooth to touch. Again though you have the same problem but when off the accelerator. Surly you can see why I'm confused.com

Well, for me, I had what from your description was the same sound, but from the rear,,, and it was the rear differential after all.
Have you tried attaching a mic and recording the sound to see where it's most noticeable? ikonw8

Hi, my issue is at the front and gets worse when I steer left and right at speed. Have yet done the microphone.

Thats precisely what mine was doing, with the most noise/rumble at 45-50mph. As soon as I took my foot off the accelerator, it was nice and quiet.
Refurbished front Diff completely solved it.
My wheel bearings on the other hand, made a growling noise if I turned the wheel slightly in either direction at speed.
Sorry for the bad news as in my case these repairs set me back nearly $1500 CAD when it was all said and done, and that was doing my own installations. 2005 NAS SE Petrol V8

Hi armybuck 041, many thanks for your reply. I thought I might be going mad. I have been told in conversation with my mechanic that it might be the shims but what that means I don't know. This might sound silly but I would love it to be the front diff but given the amount of money I've spent trying to fix this problem it's conformation I want first before I spend anything else.
Thanks for confirming that this could be the front diff.
Regards

This sounds very similar to my problem. I get a rumbling at 60 mph which seems to be getting worse. nothing at 59 or 63 so you can accelerate through the problem speed. Goes quiet when you take your foot off accelerator - it sounds and feels like it's generated from centre to passenger side front
and is a bit like driving on the rumble strip at the edge of the road. I've had new hubs at front, new ARB bushes and drop links and I know the front lower arms need doing. Not really had the chance to assess changes while turning L or R. I have a warranty and will argue early life failure if the diff is the cause but in the same way am looking for a bit of certainty on the diagnosis. Will be booking it in with the dealer today if I get time. Dave.
