discovery 3 2008 oil pump advice
hi all
i bought my first disco 3 in february 79000 on clock 2008 xs
need some sound advice please
it has been well looked after and i have had cam belt and all oils and filters changed including new 2 part sump filter and diff oils
since then and probably having too much time reading about the horrors
i need advice if the oil pump housing should be done
checked and it takes about 3 seconds for the oil light to go out on startup
how often do these things bust ? is it common as one local LR indie says hes never had one
and another states he alwYs changes them on the cam belt change
what would be the average cost and time as our local LR dealer quoted £2200
obviously neurosis sets in not knowing if this is common especially as you cant see if any cracks are seeting in without a strip down and im not skilled enough to do that
cheers

the worry isn't based around the oil light.
Best thing to do, is take it back to who ever did the cambelt. Ask them to strip the cover off for you. (fan needs to come off). Pay them for the labour. Go down and inspect the pump yourself. See pics on here. You can then see if it has the strengthing metal part.
Get a quote from him before hand as to what a he will charge to change the pump.
Pump itself is about £150 + bolt + seal (the seal should be genuine LR only) and if its the wrong type get him to change it. Should be well under £500

It’s a difficult one to answer as it depends on the pump that is fitted to the car
The 2007 era one had a poor casting design that gave a weak spot allowing the belt tension to fracture the section where it mounted to the pump. But at around the point your car was made in the factory the design again changed and the problem then stopped
Mine Is a 2009 D3 and it has the newer design pump which didn’t have the weakness but I had a new pump ready when I changed the belts just in case but returned it as it wasn’t needed. However you can only really be sure by stripping it to the point you can see the area on the pump
There’s plenty of people who Ride round in 2007 era cars who are unaware of the issue, however I would definitely have ave it changed if it hasn’t been done it’s a huge cost to put right if it snapped
If you are handy with some tools, the only difficult bit to sort would be the Viscous fan removal if you don’t have a tool, Which are cheap to buy if the web everything else Is just steady work to get to the point you can see if it needs doingMust stop buying shiny toys....

Does this oil pump issue apply to all Discovery 3s or just to diesels? I have the petrol V8.
